Cloud Cult @ Bowery: What It Feels Like To Be Alive

In spite of countless emphatic suggestions to witness the spectacle that is a Cloud Cult gig, I failed to take the endless advice until this past Saturday night at Bowery Ballroom.

Attempting to describe Cloud Cult’s 60-minute set is no easy task. The Minnesotans that comprise the collective successfully meld together all of the following (seemingly random) elements/instruments: trumpets, cellos, 2 live painters, keyboard samples, face masks, psychedelic video projections and a healthy dose of sincere, instantly pleasurable, kitsch.

While Cloud Cult is often lumped into the ‘freak folk’ or ‘experimental indie’ sub-genres, the band is truly best illustrated with no title whatsoever. In similar fashion to Clinic, Animal Collective & Man Man, Cloud Cult has written an entirely new code of their own, and perfected it to a tee over the course of the last twelve years. MP3 at bottom.
