Every single piece I’ve read on James Yuill over the course of the last few months (review, bio, press release or otherwise) mentions the equally intriguing and troublesome sub-genre known as folktronica. It’s for this reason that I went into last night’s gig with wavering amounts of trepidation and anticipation. Thankfully, Mr. Yuill’s 35 minute set was not only delightful but melodic & entrancing as well. Surrounded by a slew of knob twiddling devices and backed by an acoustic guitar, James’s sound is akin to a heavenly collaboration between Kings Of Convenience, Dan Deacon & David Byrne. And I adored it. Watch his clip for ‘No Surprise’ here. Visit JY on MySpace.
