News first broke about Stephin Merritt’s NYC stage adaptation of Coraline back in the summer of 2007. For nearly two years, I’ve been waiting with heavily bated breath to catch the musical. Thankfully, I was fortunate enough to experience a preview of the show last Saturday night and it was nothing short of brilliant from start to finish. Based on Neil Gaiman‘s well revered & highly alluring novel, Stephin Merritt infuses his sensational sense of wit, humor, sarcasm & melody into each song included throughout the 100 minute performance. The magical story coupled with the charming music and superb acting (most notably by Jayne Houdyshell whom plays the title character – I can’t possibly state how incredibly she portrayed the curious child) made Coraline one of the best musicals I’ve seen to date. Absolutely remarkable! Sample some music from Coraline here. Follow MCC Theater on Twitter. Stephin Merritt recently chatted with NY1, Vanity Fair & Metromix.
