I recently chatted with Carpe PM’s DJ Jess. Our full exchange:
1. How would you describe Carpe PM’s sound in twenty words?
For every gutter romance, a melody. For every troubled poet, a lyric. For every wonderful heartbreak, a beat.
2. What were favorite albums of 2009?
The album is a dead format. The future of music lies in the single MP3 “bundle” with a b-side and a remix. I’m not alone in thinking this, and I’m excited about it, as bands and artists will be forced to release only music worth listening to. Can you imagine that? Me neither. Having said that, 2009 brought us the perfect synth-pop album with Royskopp’s Junior. Fat synths, clever beats, whirling filters, intoxicating vocals, and a focus on the most important thing: melody, melody, melody!

3. What’s the inspiration behind your first proper single, ‘Affection Affliction’?
That inevitably crippling naivete that allows you to fall in love over and over and over again, when you know full well nothing good can come of it. I reinterpret that insane vow “till death do us part” as “till love do us part”, coupled with the imagery of your world crumbling around you. I ask, “How could we know”? But of course, we do know, and yet we keeping falling for it. Falling and falling…
4. Why’d you choose to cover ‘Alsatian…’ for TMS Hearts Moz?
A strange affair with a European, unnerving suspicion, and spontaneous sex. It’s an anthem for New York City if ever there was one.
5. What’s the most intriguing facet of the NYC music scene?
There are simply no rules. From Freelance Whales to Lady GaGa, it would seem anything goes these days.
6. What’s the least intriguing facet of the NYC music scene?
Too much focus on the past. Let’s push things forward, shall we? Bowie has come and gone. Let it go and let’s see what we can do next!
7. Musically speaking, what’s your biggest guilty pleasure?
The genuinely erotic response I have to touching vinyl albums. I can’t be seen in public holding my copy of Music For The Masses. It gets embarrassing. Children cry. The elderly gasp.
8. What was your New Year’s resolution?
Act as if ye have faith, and faith shall be given to you. In other words, “Fake it till you make it”.
Yesterday, Carpe PM gave us an exclusive mixtape.
