8 QUESTIONS WITH: YOU SAY PARTY! WE SAY DIE!

Earlier today, I chatted with Becky Ninkovic. Enjoy our full exchange below:

1. What are 3 differences b/w XXXX and YSPWSD’s earlier LPs?

A) We worked with a new producer, Howard Redekopp. Our last two albums were produced by Shawn Cole. B) XXXX was created over a longer period of time and we had a larger budget to work with, thus giving it more of a chance to be a finished piece of work. C) We poured our hearts into XXXX. Where the last two albums caught us in our youth or immaturity, high energy and frenzy, or lost in the chaos of touring and crazy times and whatever else. We broke through a lot of difficulties and found new strength, new heart and ultimately new love for ourselves, each other and the music.

2. What’s the inspiration behind the video for ‘There Is XXXX’?

I had been visualizing the video for ‘There Is XXXX” since I wrote the lyrics. Dreams of “XXXX” as a bird coming to me through the darkness. And I love to make costumes that give me the motion and grace like a bird, with wings outstretched. My dear friend Vanessa Fischer made all the costumes.

3. Can you kindly list a few dream collaborators?

Spike Jonze & Michel Gondry would be amazing! Also, we’re going to make a video for “Laura Palmer’s Prom” with our dear friend, director Jeff Scheven. We’ve wanted to work with him for a long time. We’re elated.

4. Are there any Vancouver acts that we should know?

Devon (our drummer)’s other band is Hard Feelings. The B-Lines & Gang Violence are great too. There are quite a few cool bands coming out now.

5. Which city has been the most receptive to YSPWSD’s live show?

That is a hard one to answer! I recall signing boy’s naked chests in Vienna, that was pretty cool. Haha. We were just in New York and the crowds were so warm to us. You know, there are so many cities I/we love to play. Every single time we go to Winnipeg we play at a place called The Royal Albert and it is always a packed out dance party, so I think I would have to say Winnipeg!

6. Who are you currently listening to?

The new Love Is All album. We just saw them play in New York too. So good. Sonic Youth happens to be a staple for us on many of our tours.

7. What are your plans & goals for 2010?

To tour XXXX all over the world. We are going to Europe for almost 8 weeks this spring and back again in August for the festivals. Then we are doing Asia in the fall and hopefully Australia as well. And I am sure The U.S. and Canada are amongst all these tours as well. We also have new songs we want to demo as well as some skeletons we would like to put more flesh on. So writing and recording are definitely part of our plans and goals as well.

8. Are there any misconceptions that you’d like to clear up?

We are not touring with Anal Cunt this summer. We aren’t goth or disco and our name doesn’t really mean anything to do with death. Also, we aren’t positive that Christina Aguilera’s baby is Derek’s but it could be possible.
