8 QUESTIONS WITH: DELUKA

Earlier today, I chatted with Deluka’s Ellie Innocenti. Our full exchange:

1. How would you describe Deluka in twenty words or less?

We’re an English band in New York, we make dance music with guitars, or guitar music you can dance to.

2. What’s the inspiration behind the video for ‘Cascade’?

We worked with fashion photographer Antoine Verglas, we’d done a photo shoot with him that turned out great and he was pretty taken with our music, so he suggested he make the video and we jumped at the chance to work with him again. We all wanted it to be a performance video rather than a narrative video as it’s the first introduction to us as a band. Antoine was very much like ‘turn up in your own clothes exactly how you look and play’. He has a great eye for making you look good too. There’s loads of light imagery in the lyrics and we were lucky enough to get Michael Appel from MTV who made the lighting look like an especially well lit show!

3. You’re recording your debut LP in Brooklyn. How’s it going?

Yeah it’s going amazingly – we can’t believe it sometimes. We look out the studio window which is based in DUMBO (Brooklyn) and see the whole Manhattan skyline and all the bridges. It’s pretty inspiring for us. We’ve nearly finished the record but while we have use of the studio and are able to work as long as we like in there, we’re always trying to better ourselves. We tend to do the night shift and don’t know when to stop sometimes, but you can never have too many songs!

4. Can you kindly list a few dream collaborators?

We’ve always loved the work of Paul Epworth, we just think his style is really spot on. Soulwax, James Murphy. Something with Bowie would be nice – or Prince – there are so many!

5. Are there any UK based acts that we should keep an ear out for?

There’s a band called Wild Palms that have a great sound, I’m not sure if they’ll make it across the pond though.

6. Who are you currently listening to?

We’re listening to the new LCD Soundsystem album, a couple of the new MIA tracks – I’m looking forward to hearing the whole record. The Phoenix album is good, Get Shakes are a band staple! And the NYPC record is pretty cool too.

7. What are your plans & goals for 2010?

To get the record out and tour as much as possible.

8. Are there any misconceptions that you’d like to clear up?

Well this doesn’t come up very often, but I have read on one occasion the gravely misinformed idea that Deluka is a girl with a backing band. We are a band, and always have been. Kris and I write ALL the music and have developed our sound over the last three years in my make shift bedroom studio. We are on an indie label who thankfully have embraced our DIY ethic so there you have it!

The thing that I like about Deluka is that they know what sounds good. They are a really strong band with strong vocals and catchy songs, what more could you ask for? I have been dying to see them live, does anyone know when they are coming to philly?

FInally a band that actually plays like a band as oppose to each member being a single entity. I haven’t heard anything like Deluka in a long time, its quite nice. I will definitely be downloading Deluka’s EP.
