The wonderful Letters of Note blog (bookmark it now!) has unearthed some correspondence between Morrissey and pen-pal Robert Mackie in the early 80s, prior to the formation of The Smiths.

I’ve got loads of books, more books than waxings. I’m dead intellectual like. Do you like books? I’ll have those written in brail ready for you.

As with pretty much anything LoN posts, it’s utterly fascinating (especially when Moz offers to tape a couple of records for his mate: doesn’t he know that HOME TAPING IS KILLING MUSIC?).

There’s even some hints at future-Morrissey’s predilection for saying silly things about whole groups of people!

Oh well. We still love him.
