Each week, the Pixies are releasing recorded live shows from their archives. This week, is their set from the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island on August 6th, 2005. The downloads are priced at $3.99 each, which one part of me wants to say they should be free but the other part thinks that offering high-quality downloads of shows for a low price is an incredibly smart way to grab some extra revenue. The download includes 22 songs.

Actually, it amazes me that groups haven’t taken advantage of releasing soundboard recordings (which are often taped as a matter of course these days) by means of digital distribution, and doing it at prices like this which is just the right side of impulse purchase. No one would argue that this release would be the equal of a polished live album, let alone a studio record, but it’s great to make it available to fans. ++++++plusity fucking plus!
Uh, why should professional, official recordings of complete shows be free? That seems indicative of some wildly out-of-proportion sense of entitlement.
