Review: Tim Cohen, Magic Trick

The biggest news in February with the name “Cohen” attached to it has to be the Feb 2 birth of Lorca Cohen’s baby, who’s biological father is Rufus Wainwright. Welcome to the world, Canadian Folk superbaby!

But in SF, another Cohen is doing some very strong work. Also a member of Bay Area outfit, The Fresh & Onlys, Tim Cohen is a busy guy. His new full-length, Magic Trick, is quite strong. While remaining mostly allegiant to many of the decades-old San Fran sounds of jangly psychedelia, this guy really makes it his, and this album might be one of the best of it’s kind to ever come out of NoCal.

From the opening line of “What’s the matter, you never seen a man on fire?” the record sounds timeless, and could be just as strong, if released anytime in the last 50 years, and without the desperate posturing of other weak SF psyche wanna-be’s, who I won’t name. Magic Trick effortlessly owns it.

So, while OTHER COHENS are busy building musical babies, Tim will have to be the one putting out great albums until little Cohenwright is ready to seize the crown.

Congrats to all Cohens on a very special Feb.
