Psyched for CMJ? Yeah, us too. Aside from our dope showcase (Tuesday! Pianos! Noon til the margaritas run dry!), we’re looking forward to seeing one artist in particular: Julia Easterlin.
Whozat? you say. Check it. Girl is a highly impressive one-lady-band! She weaves together recorded loops of her own gorgeous voice and keyboards and then sings over it, building full-blown songs as she goes. Her cover of Radiohead’s “There There” is incredible – she brings an alluring femininity to Yorke and Co’s slow burning barn-stormer. As the lyrics say, “There’s always a siren singing you to shipwreck…” Easterlin’s lush voice could drag even Odysseus down to the ocean floor.
It’s one of her tracks from Heavy Rotation’s upcoming release Under the Influence – an album that features Berklee students and alumni covering artists who influenced them. She’s promised to play it at the Berklee College of Music’s official showcase on Friday at 8pm at Bowery Poetry Club. Guess who’s got an exclusive premiere of the track which you can pick up below? You know who loves you.
And when you’re at the showcase (after Easterlin has blown your mind), you can pick up a download card for Under the Influence so you can get all the artists’ tracks. It’s an interesting collection since it was produced by Paul Kolderie who has worked with Dinosaur Jr., Hole, Lush among others. See you there, kiddies.
MP3: Julia Easterlin – ‘There There’

Wow,incredible,beautifull and unique!!!
Julia is surely headed for the limelight. It’s just a matter of time. I’ve seen this sort of thing happen where an artist jumps from relative obscurity playing in intimate clubs to major success stories seemingly overnight where you start noticing them on major bills and compilations rubbing shoulders with the well-knowns and the revered. Then you realize they’ve arrived. She seems primed for such a leap. Kudos to TMS for catching on and paying heed.
