Thanks to our mate Miss Modernage for the heads-up on this awesome cover. Seems John Legend is just as obsessed with Adele’s ‘Rolling in the deep’ as the rest of us and decided to record a stripped down cover of the song and toss it up as a free download on Soundcloud.
So good I almost can’t look right at it is Adele’s new video for her first single from 21 (out February 22nd), ‘Rolling in the Deep.’ The video was directed by Sam Brown (Jay-Z, Foo Fighters, Doves) and takes place in an abandoned mansion turned abstract art project. I have a deep affection for her debut single ‘Chasing Pavements’ but this song is a triumph, with echos of Peggy’s Lee’s ‘Fever,’ gospel, and Nina Simone whose gradual intro grows into a bursting well spring of soul. And god the clapping around 2:32? AMAZING.
The very lovely British songstress Adele has just announced that her sophomore album will be released February 22nd. Like her debut 19, this album too is named after the age at which she recorded the songs; in this case 21. 19 received two Grammy Awards in 2009 for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Of her new album’s style, Adele says: “I discovered lots of artists I’d never heard of, particularly Wanda Jackson, Allison Krauss, Yvonne Fair, Andrew Bird, Neko Case, Lady Antebellum and Steel Drivers who I fell in love with. Then I delved in to more from artists I’ve loved forever – Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, Elbow, Mos Def, Alanis Morissette, Tom Waits and Sinead O’Connor. There’s something in every single one of these artists that have really really inspired 21”
The first single from the album is called “Rolling in the Deep” and will be released November 15th.
