I stood online to get in and all around me, people were speaking Hebrew. It was another theme night at Bowery, this time, bands with Middle Eastern roots.

Golem is 5 piece klezmer band from Brooklyn with their hearts firmly planted in their Jewish roots. Think of their foot stomping folk music as the Eastern European dance alternative to LCD Soundsystem. For their final song, the band even teaches the audience a two-step styled dance; so fun.

The headliners for the night were the super hyper, Balkan Beat Box. Their music is a Spanish/Turkish infused frenzy that begins in the audience with the band marching onto the stage.

The show is a non-stop pounding, dance-off that expertly blends the music of three+ cultures. BBB’s set was heading into its second hour when I decided to head out. Though the music was great, after an hour of getting stomped on and fighting the girl behind me to keep my spot against the stage, I’d had enough and bolted.
