At last night’s first-ever American gig, the Welsh chanteuse put a charming yet seductive spell on 400 overzealous Brooklynites. Performing the vast majority of her brilliant debut album, The Family Jewels, Marina proved why she’s already a sensation overseas and is one of the major buzz acts at this year’s SXSW Festival. Simultaneously confident & charismatic on stage, Marina’s undoubtedly one of the most clever and engaging pop stars I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in a live setting. Official TMS Rating: 9/10. All photographs by Santiago Felipe. Be certain to visit Marina on MySpace.

Last night, The National (accompanied by a brilliant horn section) debuted a bevy of tunes from their forthcoming album, High Violet, at Brooklyn’s most pristine venue. Upon initial introduction, High Violet maintains the morose sensuality of Boxer while harking back to the unabated vigor of Alligator. In other words, there’s a high probability that it will be instantly epic. TMS Rating: 10/10. Earlier this week, The National performed on Jimmy Fallon.

In the spring of last year (just around the time that I began unveiling TMS Hearts Moz), I received an e-mail including Zee Avi’s gorgeous cover of Morrissey’s ‘First Of The Gang To Die’. From that moment on, I fell hard for Zee’s quirky and alluring self-titled debut album. Last night was the first time that I was able to catch the Malaysian singer-songwriter in a live setting. As expected, she performed a brilliant set (which even included her charming take on Interpol’s ‘Slow Hands’). Official TMS Rating: 9/10. In November, Zee Avi dropped by NPR. Be certain to visit Zee Avi on MySpace.

My favorite tribute band of all time performed a tremendous ninety minute set which even included a guest appearance by Andy Rourke (the Smith played bass on ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’). Epic. Official TMS Rating: 10/10. Back in April of 2007, I interviewed The Sons & Heirs. Visit The Sons & Heirs on MySpace. All amazing photographs courtesy of Alexis Maindrault.

Last night, to celebrate Skippy (talent booker for The Bell House & Union Hall)’s birthday, an all-star cast joined Rumours (a Fleetwood Mac cover band) for an hour’s worth of brilliance. Featured performers included members of Nada Surf, Okkervil River, Mascott, Au Revoir Simone, Dean & Britta, French Kicks, Wye Oak & Robbers On High Street alongside Sharon Van Etten, Mia Riddle & Dave Hill. Epic! Photos by Maryanne Ventrice.

This year, I’ve seen The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart more times than any other act (that tally would be five for those counting at home). Last night’s performance was just as brilliant as all the rest. Heaven! Official TMS Rating: 9/10. All shots by our wonderful staff photographer, Alexis Maindrault.
