Here are some snippets from her recent Q&A session.
Do you find it at all marginalizing to be on Music With A Twist, a Columbia subsidiary for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender artists? No, I love being on a queer label. You’re sitting in a room with a group of people who have all the same reference points as you, you don’t have to explain anything about your identity to them, and people aren’t like, “What’s a tranny?” It’s not about integration versus segregation; it’s just a way to get the music out there.
You’ve said that you think being a bigger, gay woman might have held the band back from mainstream success, but do you think it’s also worked to your advantage? I never would say that it worked to our advantage, but I think it’s a breath of fresh air for a lot of people. And you gotta play the game. If you can work it, then you work it no matter what. And talent transcends all those things.
What do you make of the fact that the Gossip are very popular in the U.K. but not nearly as well known over here? Sometimes I think of America as this imperial child of England that doesn’t know what to do until England tells it. But I’m ready for the backlash over there. It’s coming!
Love it! See below for the clip from a recent fundraiser benefiting the Siren Nation Women’s Music and Arts Festival. Download a fabulous Gossip tune at bottom of post.
NME is claiming that The Gossip frontwoman is looking to follow in the footsteps of Lily Allen by designing a clothing line for New Look. Here’s more:
*Although a link up has yet to be confirmed, the singer declared she is currently talking to the clothes shop about a range. “I’m in talks to do something with them at the moment,” she told The Sun. “I love their stuff.” The star has made no secret of her desire to bring larger women’s clothes to the mainstream. Earlier this year she refused to play an in-store gig for Top Shop, instead saying, “I want to design. Give me the job – I want to make big sizes.”*
The Gossip Dolls = Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls & Beth Ditto of The Gossip. Below is their take on Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ as performed at the aftershow for Monday night’s True Colors stop at Radio City. My review of that gig can be found via this link.
Yep, the Gossip frontlady will have her own semi-regular piece in The Guardian beginning this week. Here’s a blurb from her first column.
*I was reading an article recently that suggested I was really wild and crazy and described me as “the woman who puts Courtney Love to shame”. I just thought: “What?!” It was really funny to me, because I actually have the opposite of a rock-star lifestyle. I mean, I have to play shows and what not, but outside of that I’m a grandma. I do things like bake cakes and worry about whether I have time to pot my flowers before it gets too cold. I live with two of my best friends in Portland, Oregon, and I’ll say to them, “What do y’all wanna do tonight? You want me to make devilled eggs?” And they’ll nod, “Yeah, that sounds gooooood.”*
