Clap Your Hands Say Malkovich

Remember a few weeks back when Clap Your Hands Say Yeah mysteriously cancelled a handful of Midwest dates?

Well, as it turns out, the band ditched those shows in order to complete work on an upcoming John Malkovich film entitled The Great Buck Howard. Rumor has it that CYHSY comprised most of the score for the comedy and may even have a cameo in it. More deets on the flick can be found here on the film’s IMDB page. Intriguing!

The Great Buck Howard is due out by the end of the year.

Clap Your Hands Give The Midwest The Finger

Via the band’s MySpace bulletin:

“Hey everyone

Thanks so much to everyone who has come out to see us so far on this tour! You’ve all been really great, we really appreciate all of your love and support.

Unfortunatly, we’re very sorry to announce that we have to postpone the shows in Missouri and Indiana (April 30th, May 1st, May 2nd, and May 3rd). We are hoping to reschedule these dates for the fall. (we’ll probably have an announcment for the fall dates really soon….)

~cyhsy”

Anybody have any insight into why they are skipping these gigs? We’d love to know the truth behind the postponements.

Rilo Kiley, Devendra & Clap Your Hands Design Charity T-Shirts!

View the t-shirts here!!!

More on the organization below….

Yellow Bird Project is a Montreal-based, non-profit initiative. We collaborate with musicians in designing a T-shirt, we print and sell them on our website, and all of the money we make goes to charity. Which charity? Each of the artists gets to choose their own. We have three fundamental aims:

1) To make money for charities directly through T-shirt sales.
2) To raise awareness for charity organizations through artists’ endorsement.
3) To raise the profile of the artists we like.

We have specifically approached individuals that we think are creative and conscientious enough to make a difference.

Peter Gabriel Is The New Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Via Uncut: Former founding Genesis member and multi-instrumentalist Peter Gabriel has announced that he will release his next album in the US without the aid of a record company.

First reported in The Times newspaper yesterday (January 21), Gabriel, an early pioneer of digital music distribution, has raised £2 million towards recording and ‘shipping’ his next as-yet-untitled album in a venture with investment boutique Ingenious Media. Gabriel is expected to earn double the money that he would get through a conventional record deal.

Commercial director Duncan Reid of Ingenious explains the business savvy of the deal, saying, “If you’re paying a small distribution fee and covering your own marketing costs, you enjoy the lion’s share of the proceeds of the album. Gabriel is expected to outsource CD production for worldwide release through Warner Bros. Records.

The new album deal covers the North America territory, where Gabriel is currently out of contract. Ingenious have previously scored chart entries with independently released albums by Mick Hucknall’s Simply Red.

Cheers, Peter!! No word yet if he will cover ‘The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth’ on the new LP. Har har.

Upon This Tidal Wave Of Under-Face Value Tickets!

Yikes! I just took a hop (skip and jump excluded) over to Craigslist to see if the rumors I heard were true, and sadly they are. Seems like $42 plus Ticketbastard surcharges (making the grand total OVER $50! a ticket) for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Hammerstein Ballroom just didn’t strike New Yorkers’ nerves the same way the bookers of the event may have thought it would.

Even the last minute additions of Final Fantasy and Bob Mould are not stopping scalpers and fans alike (who I assume bought too many on the initial sale date anticipating a sell-out) from selling tickets for as little as $20 each!! Perhaps Irving would have been more appropriate, even if they did play last New Year’s there as well. Thoughts on the matter, readers?

Clap Your Hands Fans Give Satan Many Dance Moves

OK, as most of you know, I’m not the HUGEST Clap Your Hands fan. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy their catalog from time to time, but I never really was transfixed with their music the same way the buzz machine back in early ’05 was. Regardless of my thoughts on the band, I find it highly entertaining at the many many misnomers that come up upon a query for Hype Machine’s most popular tracks.

Fans of the band, eager to hear new/live tracks have really butchered the song title ‘Satan Said Dance’, which will be featured on their upcoming ’07 release, Some Loud Thunder. The song is actually one of my favorites from the band (fantastic live!) but wow….’Satan Dance Dance’, ‘Satan Can Dance’, ‘Satan Don’t Dance’ (Jerry, are you in on this one?), ‘Satan Safe Dance’ (incidentally, is that like ‘The Safety Dance’??). All these titles have been thrown around over the last few months for the simply titled ‘Satan Said Dance’.

Somebody, stop the insanity… and dance! Satan said so.
