His official statement is as follows: *I feel safe speaking of Barack Obama as a revolutionary. He’s got a brilliant analytical mind; a clear, executive control of speech; a kind, open demeanor; a full and complete grasp on the technologies of the day; a photogenic presence and beautiful family; a gift to inspire and involve everyone around him; the ability to lay the groundwork for plans, both big and small, in obvious, common language; a compassionate ear; and the good fortune to have the cultural winds at his back, and the managerial know-how to capitalize on those winds in unprecedented, brilliant ways. All of these are good things, some with more gravity than others, and every politician needs one or two of them to achieve a modicum of success. But to open a national dialog as big and wide as the one we’re in right now requires the whole truckload, in spades, and then some. It takes a leader – and I dress that word in full literal regalia – to show the way forward, to clear the path.*

MP3: DCFC – This Charming Man [alt link]
Check out sixty seconds of Chris Walla’s journey in the clip below. MP3 at bottom.
In the past three months, I’ve been treated to two magnificent Death Cab gigs. The first being an intimate solo show from Ben Gibbard, which included covers, rarities & tender takes on DCFC’s most recognizable tunes. Last night’s full band performance was my second within the last 100 days. The band’s 95 minute set was robust & unfaltering from start to finish. As a massive admirer of The Photo Album & Transatlanticism, I was pleasantly surprised to hear ‘We Laugh Indoors’, ‘Title & Registration’ as well as the latter LP’s stunning title track. However, the most well received ditty of the evening was, unquestionably, Death Cab’s take on their 2008 epic, ‘I will Possess Your Heart’. In summary, the Seattle based quartet’s largest NYC show to date was a major success. View a handful of photos, the full setlist & a DCFC MP3 below. Watch their latest video here.
(Setlist) The Employment Pages. Your Heart Is An Empty Room. The New Year. We Laugh Indoors. Crooked Teeth. Company Calls. Grapevine Fires. Summer Skin. Soul Meets Body. I Will Follow You Into The Dark. I Will Possess Your Heart. Cath. We Looked Like Giants. Long Division. The Sound Of Settling. Bixby Canyon Bridge. (Encore) Technicolor Girls. Title & Registration. A Movie Script Ending. Marching Bands Of Manhattan. Transatlanticism.
The official statement is as follows: *Barsuk Records is pleased to announce that we will be reissuing Death Cab For Cutie’s classic 1998 debut album, Something About Airplanes, on November 25th. This limited deluxe 10 year anniversary CD edition will include a bonus disc featuring a recently unearthed recording of the band’s first ever Seattle show. The reissue will also feature beautifully redesigned artwork, including extensive liner notes by noted musician and writer Sean Nelson (whose band Harvey Danger was the headliner of the bonus disc show, and who sings lead vocals on DCFC’s never before heard cover of The Smiths’ “Sweet & Tender Hooligan”).* Visit DCFC on MySpace.
