Secretly Canadian shares the highly upsetting news: *Evan Farrell, Magnolia Electric Co. touring bassist, former Rogue Wave bassist, long-time member of the musical collective Japonize Elephants and contributor to countless bands, passed away Christmas weekend from injuries sustained in an Oakland house fire. He was 33. We at Secretly Canadian have known and worked with Evan for over 10 years. He was a fixture in our community and a bright spot in all of our lives. He was exceptionally talented, funny and genuine. This can go on and on, because there is so much to say about Evan, but anyone who has come into contact with the man already understands all that can be said. Evan was a friend.*

Via Billboard: *Two workers died today (June 29) after part of the set from a Rolling Stones concert collapsed on top of them as they were dismantling it, emergency services in Madrid said. A third man was seriously injured after four people fell from a 33-foot structure that gave way as the team helped take it down after last night’s concert in Madrid.
Identities of the victims were not given, but about half the workers dismantling the set were English-speaking and traveling with the Rolling Stones tour, emergency services said.*
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the stagehands’ families and friends.
A truly saddening follow-up to the news we shared with you earlier today.
Via South Coast Today: *A police dive team today located what is believed to be the body of John Pike, a 23-year-old Hamilton man who has been missing since early Saturday.
The body was found about 4:10 p.m. off Wilbur’s Point in Buzzards Bay. The body was found in about 7 feet of water approximately 150 to 200 yards from where his cell phone was found. Fire Chief Tim Francis said the clothing on the body matches what Mr. Pike was wearing when he was last seen Saturday about 3 a.m.
“It’s pretty clear it’s him,” Chief Francis said. Mr. Pike is a 2006 magna cum laude graduate of Syracuse University, according to his aunt, Colleen Stone of Centerville. “He’s the pride and joy of our family,” she said.*
Our thoughts and prayers go out to John’s friends and family.
Deceased rock royalty Kurt Cobain, Joe Strummer, Joey Ramone and Sid Vicious are all being used in a new print/poster campaign across the UK for famous footwear designer, Dr. Martens.
Punk News reports that Dr. Martens said the following about the new ads: “We wanted to communicate that Dr. Martens boots are ‘made to last,’ and we discovered that these idolized musicians wore them. Showing them still wearing their Docs in heaven dramatized the boots’ durability perfectly. And, as images, they feel very iconic.”
Check out Joe Strummer in his Docs to your right; to view all the associated images, hop over to Oh No They Didn’t.
Direct from his MySpace blog posted a few minutes ago: I swear to God I almost died today. No jokes. We were on the pirate ship-style thing at the fair and as I got on, the bar came down into my lap but I stopped it going too far so it wouldn’t hurt me.
Then when it swung over the top it stopped upside down and I started slipping out of my fuckin seat. I FUCKIN BRICKED MYSELF.
My whole body weight was being supported by my head and arms upside down with the whole fair below me. I looked at my manager next to me who was securely fastened in his seat and my hands started to heavily sweat as I felt my head buckle with the full weight of my body in the bars suspended upside fucking down hundreds of feet in the air like a fucked up action film. I am never going on a fairground ride in my life again…
INSANE! We’re glad he’s OK and living to tell about it.
Syd Barrett, the founding member of Pink Floyd, has died aged 60 at his Cambridgeshire home where he became a recluse 30 years ago.
The guitarist, singer and lyricist founded the band in 1965 and was one of its biggest songwriting talents in its early days.
But his behaviour became erratic during the psychedelic drug haze of the 1960s and he split with the band in 1968. He has since lived reclusively in Cambridge.
A spokeswoman for Pink Floyd said: “He died very peacefully a couple of days ago.” It has been reported that he died last Friday from complications related to diabetes….more here.
