Well, 2011. You were quite the year! So much so that I’ve only been able to recover enough to think about you a full week into 2012. Crazy, huh? New jobs, lots of change, oodles of shenanigans, and yes, lots of good music. So much so, that I undoubtedly missed vast quantities of things that I really should have got to. Ho hum.
So what things did Skye like? Blimey. I just looked at the Excel spreadsheet of this year’s releases (see how cool Skye is!), and there’s a lot of stuff on there. However it’s fair to say that I do actually have a favourite record of 2011, despite my general resistance to ranking things. I know, crazy times, huh, maybe the Mayans are right after all.

These are in no particular order, and the only criteria that these albums satisfy are that I like them. I’m afraid that I’m not going to make any hyperbolic statements of greatness, but what I will do is run down some records that for me were memorable, got played a lot, and that I basically loved. You might disagree. Well, I forgive you.

Washing up in a bottle from Plastic Beach is this Jamie Hewlett video for Gorillaz’ latest single “Doncamatic”, featuring what is probably the most adorable submersible yet seen in a music video. Take that Yellow Submarine!
I actually found Daley washed up on Plastic Beach – covered in oil and singing to a seagull…or was it an albatross? Anyway, I recognise golden pipes when I hear em’ so I popped a bag over his head, hosed the boy down and chucked him in the studio with Noodle and her 8-track. I left them to it while I stepped outside for a Lucky Lung or three, and when I popped back in this is what they’d come up with! Am I a genius or WHAT?!? – Murdoc
Doncamatic is out on the 22nd of November. Gorillaz play at the o2 in London tonight before heading off to Birmingham tomorrow and Brighton on the 18th, and then on to Europe and New Zealand (click through for dates).

Head on over to youtube to listen to “Doncamatic (All Played Out)”, the new single from Gorillaz and featuring British singer Daley. Apparently the title and track derive from the Donca Matic drum machine – Japanese designed, and the first device produced by the Korg company in ’63.

It’s synthy, danceable and fun. And it’s not on Plastic Beach (no doubt you’ve noticed!) and will be released on the 22nd November.
Gorillaz UK tour dates after the jump…

Gorillaz are going on tour and they’re going to be meeting up with a frankly staggering number of guests, including:
Lou Reed (NYC only)
Mos Def (NYC, Camden and DC only)
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
Bashy
Little Dragon
De La Soul
Bobby Womack
Roses Gabor
Bootie Brown
Kano
Miho Hatori (to appear in Los Angeles and NYC only)
N.E.R.D. has been confirmed as support for the North American dates, joining the tour at Boston’s Agganis Arena and performing on all North American dates except the Montreal opener.
Hardly any of this lot need any introduction, but I caught Hypnotic Brass Ensemble supporting Blur at Hyde Park last year, and they are well worth seeing. You can grab a list of who’s going to be where at Gorillaz.com.
