Mani tells BBC: *I spoke to John & Reni about it a few years ago and they said they’d love to do it at some point in time, but Ian Brown seems dead set against it. If he changes his mind then we’ll probably do it, but then I’ll be back to Primal Scream after the one year of doing it.* Download a Stone Roses MP3 at bottom of post.
New Musical Express reports: *Ian Brown will release a new single, ‘Sister Rose’, on December 3. The song is a re-recording of the track that appears on his latest album, ‘The World Is Yours’, and is sung by Brown in Japanese. The single will be in seven-inch vinyl picture-disc format, with the English version of the track as the b-side. The single will also be available on CD format with remixes from Steve Fitzmaurice and DJ Mek. The CD will feature music videos for the title song plus previous single ‘Illegal Attacks’.* Wow!
CM reports: *Ian Brown has had a go at Kylie Minogue and said she “makes music for kids”. The Stone Roses frontman made the comments at last night’s Q Awards held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, where he picked up the gong in the ‘Legend’ category. Kylie was also in attendance at the event, after being given the ‘Idol’ award.
“I don’t know what Kylie’s doing at a music awards to be honest,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. Brown added: “I don’t think she’s cute. I don’t think she’s good-looking. Her music’s rubbish – she makes music for little kids. I’m sorry if it sounds like I’m putting her down, but there’s a lot of great minds out there making music and she’s not one of them.”*
The former Stone Roses’ frontman’s new video explores the Iraqi War and all affected by it. Dare I say it’s his best solo tune in recent memory. Those background vocals you hear, are indeed from Sinead O’Connor (as you may have already predicted). Learn more about Ian Brown’s collaborators on his forthcoming LP, The World Is Yours, here. We’ve just received confirmation that his upcoming LP, The World Is Yours, will feature Andy & Sinead, respectively. Andy Rourke will play bass for the majority of the record, while Sinead will lend her vocals for tracks #8 and 11: ‘Some Folks Are Hollow’ & ‘Illegal Attacks’.
The album is due out by Christmastime, here’s the track listing: 1. The World Is Yours 2. On Track 3. Sister Rose 4. Save Us 5. The Eternal Flame 6. The Feeding Of The 5000 7. Street Children (Pity The Child) 8. Some Folks Are Hollow 9. Goodbye To The Broken 10. Me And You Forever 11. Illegal Attacks 12. The World Is Yours (Reprise)
He’ll really try anything to stay relevant, won’t he? I just hope the former Stone Roses frontman’s new album, The World Is Yours, is better than his last few solo projects, which have been extremely disappointing.
According to Ian, chatting to NME: “I started thinking about which songs I’d used in February to April last year, then I started on writing the music and working with my producers Black Ox, working on it all July, August… by October/November, I had a clear idea of what songs I wanted to do and then we went into the studio in December, so I’ve done a month now. I recorded with a 30-piece orchestra last week. It’s going to sound amazing!”
Rumor has it that he’s also been trying to get a hold of former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and Paul Friggin’ McCartney for some assistance on the new record. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for Ian!
NME just published the following quotes from some of Britrock’s heavyweights.
“If it wasn’t for James Brown we wouldn’t have written ‘LSF’, it’s just pure rhythm ‘n’ blues and funk. “People have lost a leader, they’ve lost a character…If he was alive, God bless him, he’d be onstage today.”
Ian Brown added that the Stone Roses classic track ‘Fools Gold’ was inspired by Brown. He revealed: “(John) Squire came up with that riff (for ‘Fools Gold’) over JB’s ‘Funky Drummer’ loop. To me his music was so soulful and powerful, I just don’t think anyone could ever touch him.”
Meanwhile, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie declared the Godfather of soul also invented hip-hop, techo and punk. He said: “I think he freed music and took it into the future. Hip-hop, techno, it all comes from James Brown’s late 60′s funk records…He changed music, a couple of times. He’s an originator.”
Who would have guessed James Brown had such an influence on all of their music? I surely didn’t.
