Albums that deal in “concept” can be pretty challenging without the skill-set and the resources to realize that idea. FORTUNATELY, Rome is by a couple of guys who have a stockpile of both resources AND skills, Danger Mouse and composer Daniele Luppi.
ROME pays homage to the lush and oddly beautiful film scores that accompanied the Spaghetti-Westerns of Ennio Morrocconi, where cool bass/drum grooves met sweeping string passages and other-worldly choirs and operatic pitch-singing.

Monday’s exciting stream of excitingness is Rome, from Danger Mouse and Italian composer Daniele Luppi. It’s pretty epic, totally befitting the eternal city and the timeless soundtracks of Ennio Morricone which provide some of the inspiration. The guest spots are pretty ace (with the nice conceit of “starring”), especially that from Jack White – and from Morricone’s spaghetti western choir.
Rome is streaming over at the Guardian and also at NPR’s First Listen, and will be out later this month.

Yahoo reports: *Jack White will hit the studio with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke as soon as he is fully recovered from his neck injury. The White Stripes singer is suffering from a slipped disc and has been ordered to rest for two months. But he reveals Yorke will be the first person he calls when he’s ready to perform again & he’s already got a few songs ready. He says: “We’ve known each other for a while now. But the doctors said I couldn’t perform for two months. I’ve been writing a lot instead”.*
