A stunning take on the Billie Holiday classic.
Jeff Buckley - Strange Fruit
A stunning take on the Billie Holiday classic.
As hinted at last month, The Last Goodbye is an adaption of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet featuring the music of Jeff Buckley. When I first read about this unlikely collaboration, I must admit that I was equally intrigued as I was skeptical. A bevy of tracks from Grace & Sketches For: My Sweetheart The Drunk will always hold a special place in my heart and I was fearful that these tunes would be butchered and/or interpreted incorrectly. By last night’s second performance, I could tell that all of my worries were entirely irrational! The fourteen person cast not only did the Jeff Buckley tracks immense justice (each & every one of their vocals were spot on and sent shivers down my spine), but the actor-singers were undoubtedly successful in paralleling the sentiment in the aforementioned classics with the most well-known tragedy of all time. The ninety minute show was stunning from start to finish. In fact, I’m still reeling from it, twelve hours later. The Last Goodbye will have two more NYC runs over the course of the next few weeks. Whether or not you’re a Buckley fanatic, I strongly suggest your attendance!

The Last Goodbye will take place on 5/11, 5/25 & 6/1 @ Joe’s Pub. Deets on the project are as follows: *Created hundreds of years apart, the timeless work of two of history’s great poets collide in this visceral and moving world premiere theatrical event. Part rock concert, part Elizabethan verse, part 21st century musical, THE LAST GOODBYE features a cast of fourteen extraordinary young, up-and-coming actor/singers. Told through Jeff Buckley’s daring and soulful music, William Shakespeare’s romantic and violent tragedy (Romeo & Juliet) is new yet again.*

MP3: Jeff Buckley - Grace
Here’s official info on the project: *Executive produced by Mary Guibert (Buckley’s mother), Grace Around The World focuses on previously unreleased live performances circa 1994-95, in concert and television locales ranging from the U.S. and UK, to Germany, Japan and France (where Buckley was the #1 best-selling international catalog artist in 2008). Accompanying the 108-minute Grace Around The World DVD will be an audio CD counterpart. A special deluxe package of Grace Around The World will also contain the one-hour documentary DVD, Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley, thus bringing the total running time for the deluxe set up to 169 minutes (nearly three hours) of Jeff Buckley footage for his fans. In advance of this summer’s 15th anniversary of the release of Grace, Buckley’s landmark debut album (August 1994), the two Grace Around The World packages will be available at all physical and digital retail outlets starting June 2nd through Columbia/Legacy, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.*

Jeff Buckley - So Real (Live & Acoustic)
Love, let me sleep tonight on your couch
And remember the smell of the fabric
Of your simple city dress
Oh…
That was so real
We walked around till the moon got full
Like a plate
The wind blew an invocation
And I fell asleep at the gate
And I never stepped on the cracks
‘Cause I thought I’d hurt my mother
And I couldn’t awake from the nightmare
That sucked me in & pulled me under
Oh…
That was so real

Waiting... One of the things that gets under my skin is having to wait for a music download to finish. I usually end up playing something silly, like online bingo or some other flash game, while I'm trying to kill some time. It's an easy way to kill 10 minutes while waiting.
