Jeff Buckley – The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
Today marks ten years since Jeff’s untimely death following an ill-fated swim in the Mississippi River. Since ’97, Jeff has become an icon and influence to countless musicians and fans alike.
Below is a live cover of his take on The Smiths’ ‘The Boy With The Thorn In His Side’. Another brilliant vocal from one of this generation’s greatest troubadours.
MP3: Jeff Buckley – The Boy With The Thorn In His Side (Smiths cover)
Scottish quartet, The Cinematics, stirred up quite the buzz for themselves, after covering the Jeff Buckley classic, ‘Grace’, at this year’s SXSW. Little did they know that as they were performing the song at one of the Austin gigs, Jeff’s mom, Mary Guibert, was in attendance and visibly moved by The Cinematics take on the tune.
Frontman Scott Rilling tells Spinner: “I fell completely silent and just stared for a while… I tried to say something about the profound impact her son’s music had had on my life, but I just mumbled something fairly incoherent. I can’t really remember what she said. Someone told me she said something about [our cover] being one of the most beautiful interpretations of her son’s music she’d heard. She had a teary eye… and — I’m not proud, it’s not very rock ‘n’ roll — but my eyes were also over-powered by this weird human activity.”
Intense. Check out a video of the cover over at Spinner. It really is a majestic take on the song. Their latest LP, A Strange Education, is in stores now. More on the band over at their MySpace page.

Jeff Buckley has more lives than the Energizer Bunny! The latest compilation will act as a Best-Of and will be titled ‘So Real: Songs From Jeff Buckley’. It’ll see the light of day May 28th.
I love Jeff Buckley to pieces but since his passing a decade ago (yes, it’s been that long, already), there’ve been at least a half dozen compilations/b-side/live/early performance/other releases. Is it just me or should we leave Jeff’s legacy in tact and end the madness?
My suggestion to Jeff newcomers – pick up the Live @ Sin-e EP, Grace and Sketches For My Sweetheart, The Drunk. There’s no need for the rest…
However, if you are a Jeff completist, here’s what to expect on ‘So Real’.
Tracklist: ‘Last Goodbye’/'Lover You Should Have Come Over’/'Forget Her’/'Eternal Life’/'Dream Brother’ (alternative take)/’The Sky Is A Landfill’/'Everybody Here Wants You’/'So Real’ (acoustic live performance)/’Mojo Pin’ (live)/’Vancouver’/'Je N’en Connais Pas La Fin’/'Grace’/'Hallelujah’/'I Know It’s Over’
I will say this, his cover of The Smiths’ ‘I Know It’s Over’ is BREATHTAKING if you haven’t already heard it.
MP3: Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah
Seems like Jeff Buckley’s life will be witnessed through a biopic in the very near future! Such exciting news. That and the Ian Curtis film (Did they finally secure Jude Law?) are at the top of my list for 2007 must-sees.
Anybody who dares to tell me that Grace isn’t one of the best albums of all time is just insane. Flawless beauty.
Here’s the original Leonard Cohen version of ‘Hallelujah’ which Jeff covers ever so gracefully (mind the pun) on his 1994 debut.
