I was simply ecstatic when word spread late last week that Karen O would be debuting her new side project, Native Korean Rock, at one of Brooklyn’s most beloved & minuscule venues. For just about a half hour, she showcased a collection of love songs on par with the latter tracks from Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Show Your Bones (most notably ‘Warrior’ & ‘Sweets’), backed by a quintet comprised of strings, drums & guitars. While we all know and love Karen for her gravelly howls and mighty stage persona, it’s sometimes easy to forget that her demure side is just as impressive & captivating. The stage was adorned quite eloquently with a Korean flag, ample blue cellophane & a partial ship bow (which read ‘Seoul’). Key elements of Karen’s outfit included roses, fringes & a spectacularly detailed navy blue cap. All in all, an immensely beautiful & touching evening. Visit NKR on MySpace.
(Setlist) Ooo. Body. Visits. Beast. Rapt. Sunset Sun. Comes The Night. Day Go By.
She shares the following deets: *Native Korean Rock is a side project of mine comprised of a body of love songs written over the last two years, to be performed with a motley crew of NYC natives. Expect high drama, high stakes in two intimate performances. Does Native Korean Rock have anything to do with Yeah Yeah Yeahs? NO Are these the leaked demos of years ago? NO* Download a YYYs track at bottom.
NKR plays Brooklyn’s Union Pool on 7/21. Purchase tix here.
She tells NME the following regarding the official clip for the Fever To Tell single (video below): “They were real tears. My boyfriend at the time (Angus Andrew of Liars) was supposed to come to the shoot – he was three hours late and I was just about to leave for tour. I didn’t think he was even going to come and this was the song that was written for him. He eventually showed up and I got myself in a real emotional state. Patrick Daughters, the video’s director, is my best friend, so I was fine with him using it all.”
Tickets for their area show at Webster Hall on August 7th go on sale this Friday at noon via this Ticketbastard link. Each one will set you back $37.50 plus surcharges. Yikes!

Just like your sluts! Seriously, who are you guys pulling for? I’d love to see them give it to Laura but after previewing the final runway collection I think Jeff might have it in the bag.
AOL music reports: Wednesday night fashion fans will be glued to their sets to see Jeffrey, Michael, Uli and Laura battle it out in part 1 of Bravo’s ‘Project Runway’ season finale. Though super-chic rock frontwoman Karen O will miss it in real time thanks to a not-so-secret MySpace show that her band the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are playing in Florida, her VCR is at the ready.
“The suspense is killing me,” she groans down the phone to AOL Music. “I watch it with my friends. We’re very into the dramatic highs and lows, the sadism that goes on [and] how mean everyone is to each other.” Fans of the band already know Ms. O is always ahead of the fashion curve, so it should come as no surprise she has a pretty strong opinion about who should take home the prize. “Michael all the way,” she enthuses. “Come on! He’s so irresistible. He’s handsome, sweet, down-to-earth, and as far as his designs go, I’d say his stuff is the least predictable out of everyone’s.
“You can kind of peg everyone else with their signature thing, which is kind of good in one way, but I always go for the designer that shows a bit more versatility and keeps you guessing. He makes some really sexy stuff,” she says. Though it will be several months before season 4 begins, O says her passion for the show may extend to a possible guest appearance, accompanied by her own designer, Christian Joy. “Actually, they’ve approached me a couple of times, but nothing really happened. Maybe if we get all the AOL readers to push behind it, [it will happen],” she laughs.
The pair have joined forces for the song ‘Backass’, which is featured on the soundtrack of the ‘Jackass Number 2′ film.
This is the second time the two women have collaborated. Peaches remixed the Yeah Yeah Yeahs song ‘Cheated Hearts’ for the single release in September.
The soundtrack also features songs from Pavement, Elvis Presley and The Datsuns.
