Well, 2011. You were quite the year! So much so that I’ve only been able to recover enough to think about you a full week into 2012. Crazy, huh? New jobs, lots of change, oodles of shenanigans, and yes, lots of good music. So much so, that I undoubtedly missed vast quantities of things that I really should have got to. Ho hum.
So what things did Skye like? Blimey. I just looked at the Excel spreadsheet of this year’s releases (see how cool Skye is!), and there’s a lot of stuff on there. However it’s fair to say that I do actually have a favourite record of 2011, despite my general resistance to ranking things. I know, crazy times, huh, maybe the Mayans are right after all.

From Jealous Butcher Records comes a rather incredible new collection of covers by a slew of indie artists including M. Ward, The Long Winters and Loch Lomond. The compilation entitled From The Land of Ice And Snow: The Songs of Led Zeppelin took several years to record and part of the proceeds will be going to support First Octave, a music education-based organization that believes that consistent music education fosters creative as well as intellectual values and is essential to a balanced core curriculum in schools. Pre-order the album out on October 10th here.
The label tells the story of how the collection came to be on their site:
“Rob (Jealous Butcher), Matt (Ward) and John (King) were sitting around the basement in the evening working on cover art for a project, espousing their love and respect for Led Zeppelin in their formative musical years. And wouldn’t it be nice to put together a tribute release featuring friends both near and afar, not being a “who’s who” sort of tribute, but rather a “community” inspired collection of Zeppelin songs.”
