BEAR IN HEAVEN @ MERCURY LOUNGE: SHOW ME YOUR TEETH

Our brilliant guest blogger, Britt Lundborg, attended last night’s gig and offers a full report! No one inside Mercury Lounge last night seemed in the least concerned that they were missing the State of the Union. Politics can be TiVOed – Bear In Heaven playing the late show wasn’t to be missed. Before the set even began, they lit dozens of incense sticks and the scented smoke wafted around them before pouring into the audience. With this, coupled with their intensely rhythmic music, Bear In Heaven hopes to promise a ‘fully immersive’ concert experience. At first sight, I wondered whether these Brooklyn boys had spent a smidge too much time at Burning Man and had come away with some hoaky notion of music as spirit guide. But perhaps that’s just my adverse reaction to patchouli. In any case, it fucking worked and they made some magic. Listening to Bear In Heaven’s LP, Beast Rest Forth Mouth, is a far more electronic experience than their live show when the music really grows some teeth. Obviously, that has to do with putting a face to a bleep-bloop, but, seeing that the percussion emanates from a man with a drum-set instead of a machine brings a raw tumult to the music as a whole. And, man, can Joe Stickey man those sticks. He propelled their glorious tribal anthem, ‘Beast In Peace’, into Mercury Lounge’s intimate corners and beckoned everyone into the beat. Though sometimes reedy, lead singer Jon Philpot’s voice cuts through the music’s grand furor. When they played ‘You Do You’, its psychedelically-painted prog caused the room to swoon. Categorizing BIH is problematic – they reside in the same space as Yeasayer but sometimes have sleep-overs at Secret Machines’ house. So, why categorize at all? Just do yourself some good & dwell in the expansive drone.

THE ANSWERING MACHINE @ MERCURY LOUNGE: POP LIKE LIGHTBULBS

Back at SXSW 2008, I saw a brief yet highly enjoyable set from the Manchester based quartet known as The Answering Machine. Since that afternoon (nearly thirteen months ago), I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of their debut LP (Another City Another Sorry). That album will finally see daylight later this spring and I can assure you, it’ll surely go down as one of my favorites of ’09. Last night (TAM’s NYC debut), The Answering Machine performed a bulk of the aforementioned release and it sounded glorious. Watch their official video for ‘Cliffer’ here. Be sure to visit TAM on MySpace.

JAMES YUILL @ MERCURY LOUNGE: SWEET SWEET LOVE

Every single piece I’ve read on James Yuill over the course of the last few months (review, bio, press release or otherwise) mentions the equally intriguing and troublesome sub-genre known as folktronica. It’s for this reason that I went into last night’s gig with wavering amounts of trepidation and anticipation. Thankfully, Mr. Yuill’s 35 minute set was not only delightful but melodic & entrancing as well. Surrounded by a slew of knob twiddling devices and backed by an acoustic guitar, James’s sound is akin to a heavenly collaboration between Kings Of Convenience, Dan Deacon & David Byrne. And I adored it. Watch his clip for ‘No Surprise’ here. Visit JY on MySpace.

IDA MARIA @ MERCURY LOUNGE: SO MUCH BETTER

In similar fashion to last week’s Glasvegas gig, we’ve once again asked Dom & Britt for their comedic take on a hotly tipped act. This time around, Ida Maria! Enjoy the duo’s full dialog, a photo plus an Ida Maria selection below.

Britt: So we had sex and the cat was on the bed the whole time.

Dominik: She was like “I’m so gonna lick my asshole to this later on”.

Britt: Ida Maria may have thought that after her performance last night.

Dominik: Yeah, she was very well received. I liked that last victory lap she did around the stage. You know, she really reminds me of Paula Poundstone in both looks and voice (which is a terrible thing to say about a twenty something musician, especially if they’re female).

Britt: The Paula Poundstone vibe is passing, just the result of a less than flattering haircut.

Dominik: Yeah, but also that face. And that voice. But I think the overall vibe was very Juliette Lewis. There’s this weird fine line she’s walking where I can’t exactly tell if she’s playing a part, or if she’s even aware that she’s playing a part, you know? Have you paid attention to the lyrics on the album?

Britt: I so do not get the Juliette Lewis thing because JL has that drug-addict skinniness and crazy Scientologist look. Honestly, I got more of a rock chick, a la Avril Lavigne mixed slightly with Chrissie Hynde.

Dominik: I’m sticking with Poundstone and the more I think about it, the more I’m certain.

SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS @ MERCURY: WIRED FOR LIGHT

With a sound that effortlessly coalesces laptop pop, shoegaze, post-rock, electro & trip-hop, School Of Seven Bells’ brilliant debut LP, Alpinisms, was positively one of my favorite albums of 2008. As eager as I was to catch SO7B during this year’s CMJ Festival, I (sadly) witnessed a massively abbreviated set due to a myriad of sound issues and time constraints. In other words, last night served as my official introduction to the trio’s live show and it was nothing short of genius (my only suggestion would be to ditch the overzealous strobe lights). Performing nearly every track from the aforementioned release, School Of Seven Bells has secured a very warm place in my heart. SO7B recently recorded a set for The Spinner. Europeans can catch School Of Seven Bells on their 2009 winter trek. Visit the band on MySpace.

(Setlist) Iamundernodisguise. Wired For Light. Lalobye. Chain. Connjur. Prince Of Peace. White Elephant Coat. Half Asleep. My Cabal. Sempiternal/Amaranth.
