Our LA correspondents, Dominik & Grant attended last night’s gig and have shared the following review. Nestled in a strip mall with a Spanish supermarket and a travel agent, Costa Mesa’s Detroit Bar is not the typical venue to see a show. Inside it’s even worse. 2000 degrees and smelling like the set of The Biggest Loser, this was the most cramped show I’ve ever attended. Also adding to the annoyance, Miike Snow still hasn’t gone on by 11:30. What a miserable night. But no. The minute Miike Snow appears on stage, in a cloud of smoke, wearing white face masks, all is forgiven. The opening bars of “Burial” unite the audience which sings nearly every word to every song played. Not that there were many. In their 60 minute plus set, Miike Snow played only 8 tunes from their self titled debut LP. Each track was mixed, dubbed, looped and extended. This is not what we expected a Miike Snow to feel like. This was a rave. The extended break in album highlight “Sylvia” informed the audience what to expect. Lasers shot into the audience, blinding and hypnotic. Songs segued into each other seamlessly.
