ELIZABETH & THE CATAPULT @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG: JUMP A LITTLE HIGHER

The jazzy stepsister of Fiona Apple? A modern day Carole King? A PG version of PJ Harvey? A more refined Regina Spektor? The indie Vanessa Carlton? I’m struggling with a proper description of Elizabeth & The Catapult’s music but I think the aforementioned references should direct you to the appropriate ballpark. Last night’s piano heavy set could have easily been a snoozer. However, the Brooklyn based trio truly impressed me with a delightful and engaging collection of tunes (drawn heavily from their debut LP: Taller Children) which proved to be the perfect soundtrack as summer ends and autumn nears. Watch their official video for ‘Taller Children’ here. Be certain to visit Elizabeth & The Catapult on MySpace.

FISCHERSPOONER @ MUSIC HALL: A VISION

Having read myriad reports of how ridiculous, over the top and downright enjoyable a Fischerspooner show can be, I still left last night’s gig in an utter state of shock. Maybe I should have been prepared for all of the following props: 4 modern dancers, 12 costume changes, 2 massive vertical mirrors on wheels, ample wigs, video projections, TV monitors, strobe lights, exquisitely applied make-up, helmets & bright blue kneepads (just to name a few features of the performance). But I was not! As Casey Spooner exclaimed before ‘Emerge’: ‘Aren’t you sick of this song yet? The newspapers said it was over. Fuck the newspapers, the internet made me famous!’. Brilliance! Oh, and Madonna was hiding out in the balcony. This is the kind of event that can be much better explained via photographs, so I’ll let the pictures do the talking this time around. Visit FS at their official site. Entertainment is out now.

THE TWILIGHT SAD @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG: MAPPED BY WHAT SURROUNDED THEM

Opening last night’s epic Mogwai gig (and the remainder of their North American trek), were the band’s Scottish pals that comprise The Twilight Sad. In numerous interviews since the release of their debut album (2007′s Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters), TTS has described their sound as ‘folk + noise’. For those familiar with The Twilight Sad, it goes without saying that their recorded material and live show are entirely different from one another. The former is beautifully sedated while the latter is layered, rowdy & intense. Their fabulous forty minute set focused heavily on new material from their as-yet-untitled sophomore LP (due out this summer). These tunes are notably darker and more biting than their earlier work. They undoubtedly left me with heavily baited breath to hear them once again. Visit TTS on MySpace.

MOGWAI @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG: FRIENDS OF THE NIGHT

Last night marked my fourth live encounter with the Scottish grandfathers of post-rock. Each time I’ve seen Mogwai, I’ve been amazed, flabbergasted & downright floored. Monday’s Brooklyn gig provided more of the same brilliance. In fact, it may just have been the strongest of the bunch (standing mere inches from mastermind, Stuart Braithwaite, surely didn’t hurt matters whatsoever). Drawing from each of their stellar releases (with the exclusion of 1999′s Come On Die Young), Mogwai’s (extensively loud) two-hour set was damn near perfect. View all dates on their current North American trek here. Mogwai will make an appearance at APW Festival 2009 in August.
