“In 1987 on the Sunset Strip, a small town girl met a big city dreamer – and in LA’s most legendary rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the 80s. It’s Rock Of Ages, a hilarious feel-good love story told through the hit songs of iconic rockers Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Whitesnake and many many more. Don’t miss this awesomely good time where big hair meets big dreams and the result totally wails”.

News first broke about Stephin Merritt’s NYC stage adaptation of Coraline back in the summer of 2007. For nearly two years, I’ve been waiting with heavily bated breath to catch the musical. Thankfully, I was fortunate enough to experience a preview of the show last Saturday night and it was nothing short of brilliant from start to finish. Based on Neil Gaiman‘s well revered & highly alluring novel, Stephin Merritt infuses his sensational sense of wit, humor, sarcasm & melody into each song included throughout the 100 minute performance. The magical story coupled with the charming music and superb acting (most notably by Jayne Houdyshell whom plays the title character – I can’t possibly state how incredibly she portrayed the curious child) made Coraline one of the best musicals I’ve seen to date. Absolutely remarkable! Sample some music from Coraline here. Follow MCC Theater on Twitter. Stephin Merritt recently chatted with NY1, Vanity Fair & Metromix.

As hinted at last month, The Last Goodbye is an adaption of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet featuring the music of Jeff Buckley. When I first read about this unlikely collaboration, I must admit that I was equally intrigued as I was skeptical. A bevy of tracks from Grace & Sketches For: My Sweetheart The Drunk will always hold a special place in my heart and I was fearful that these tunes would be butchered and/or interpreted incorrectly. By last night’s second performance, I could tell that all of my worries were entirely irrational! The fourteen person cast not only did the Jeff Buckley tracks immense justice (each & every one of their vocals were spot on and sent shivers down my spine), but the actor-singers were undoubtedly successful in paralleling the sentiment in the aforementioned classics with the most well-known tragedy of all time. The ninety minute show was stunning from start to finish. In fact, I’m still reeling from it, twelve hours later. The Last Goodbye will have two more NYC runs over the course of the next few weeks. Whether or not you’re a Buckley fanatic, I strongly suggest your attendance!

Futurity is a charming (yet ultimately tragic) musical focusing on all of the following topics and/or ideas: The Civil War, mathematics, philosophy, science, technology & imagination. I was fortunate enough to catch its first run back in January at The Zipper Factory. Last night marked Futurity‘s Joe’s Pub debut (you still have three more chances to catch the show before the end of May) and it was equally as glorious if not more so! Only The Lisps could put together something so endearing, amusing & affective with such inexplicable grace. And that’s why I love them. Visit The Lisps at their official MySpace page. Read my extensive Futurity based interview with each of The Lisps here.

Deets on the project are as follows: *Created hundreds of years apart, the timeless work of two of history’s great poets collide in this visceral and moving world premiere theatrical event. Part rock concert, part Elizabethan verse, part 21st century musical, THE LAST GOODBYE features a cast of fourteen extraordinary young, up-and-coming actor/singers. Told through Jeff Buckley’s daring and soulful music, William Shakespeare’s romantic and violent tragedy (Romeo & Juliet) is new yet again.*

MP3: Jeff Buckley – Grace

Official deets are as follows: *This event (held at Lucille Lortel Theatre on 4/21) gives you a unique opportunity to go behind the creative curtain and explore the process of bringing Neil Gaiman’s wildly popular novel, Coraline, to the stage. Bill Goldstein, of The New York Times and WNBC’s Saturday Today In New York, will moderate a discussion between the creative team of Stephin Merritt (composer), David Greenspan (book writer), Leigh Silverman (director) & Jayne Houdyshell (Coraline) & take questions from the audience. The evening will conclude with a first-ever public performance of one of Coraline‘s songs, performed on the ukulele and sung by Stephin Merritt.*
