Review: Rudebox- Cause You’re So Nasty

We might be music sluts here, but we are not music snobs. You are just as likely to find me listening to the new Joanna Newsom as you are to see me driving along, singing at the top of my lungs to S Club 7 . That being said, prepare yourselves for my review of Robbie Williams’s new(ish) album- Rudebox.

I have been a Robbie Williams fan since 1999, ever since his video for ‘Millennium’ first hit America’s shores. His music had that perfect cheeky, Brit pop flavour that I loved- and I still do. Now-a-days, Robbie’s sound might have changed somewhat but his sometimes silly, sometimes clever, musical rantings still ring with a pop perfection that screams “I know what I am doing!”

No matter if you love him, or you hate him, I think you’ll find yourself hardpressed to deny the dance power of ‘Rock DJ’ or ‘Kids.’ This same rule applies to not only the title single from Rudebox, but also to about a half a dozen of the other tracks. Robbie wanted to make a dance album and with the help of The Pet Shop Boys, Mark Ronson, Soul Mekanik, William Orbit and Steven Duffy, accomplished just that…for the most part.

Unlike Robbie’s other albums, with the the sole exception of Swing When Your Winning, Rudebox consists of an overwhelming amount of songs Williams did not actually write himself. ‘Kiss me’ is by Steven Duffy, We’re the Pet Shop Boys’ by My Robot Friend, ‘Louise’ by Human League, ‘Never touch that switch’ by Andrews and Spencer, ‘King of the bongo’ by Manu Chau and ‘Lovelight’ by Lewis Taylor. This is surprising. Robbie dropped Guy Chambers as his writing partner after the album Escapology and with the relatively unsuccessful Intensive Care, written on his own with Steven Duffy, perhaps the Prince of pop is a bit gun shy. That or a spoiled pop star just wanted to make a danceable Streets album and simply employed the best in the biz to help him accomplish that. Irregardless, Rudebox is an album filled with some perfect, nonesenseical, pop gems- even if he does rhym “Five star” with “PropAR.”

The first single, first heard back in July on British radio, is ‘Rudebox.’ If there was a song to define “booty shaking”, this might be it. It is an 80′s hip-hop, soul, dance track that includes the brilliant lines “Are we gonna have sex? Yes! Will you wear your knee socks? ohh!” The video is certainly nothing to write home about though, and features a rather bloating looking Robbie but search YouTube for ‘Rudebox’ and you’ll find some pretty damn funny home movies with some real winners interpretive dancing to the song.

The second single is ‘Lovelight’ and is another dark dance track which features some very beautiful vocals. The third single, the soon to be released ‘She’s Madonna’, is a dark moody piece as well, with deep drum beats juxtaposed against its silly subject matter: Madonna. It features the honestly humourous lyric, “I love you baby, but face it she’s Madonna.” Of the song Robbie says, “In case anyone asks…There is nothing tongue in cheek about this song at all, I have always fancied Madonna. I’d have hoped for it to be this good, but you can never tell before venturing into the studio. It is just a bonus that it worked out so well.” Well, it turned out alright mate. The song is a bit of a slower burner. Eventually it gets there but with the line “you’re frozen now I’ve done the freezing,” it is a bit of a tough hurdle.

Other songs to watch out for is the riduculously fun ‘Good Doctor’ featuring the “star, propAR” rhym, the silly, yet brilliant, ‘Bongo Bong,’ on which The Guardian says, “There are certainly moments when you wonder what on earth Williams thinks he’s up to – not least a cover of world music star Manu Chao’s novelty track Bongo Bong/Je Ne T’aime Plus that concludes with Williams doing a terrible impersonation of the French legend he recently namechecked in an interview as Serge Gainsborough – yet, for the most part, it turns out not to be bizarre, baffling or downright strange, but somehow inevitable.”- ouch.

The track ‘The Actor’ I find nearly impossible to listen to while the final tune, ‘Summertime’ is a stunningly beautiful song with soaring, inspiring music. It is one of the first songs Williams wrote after leaving Take That and I think stands as testament that Robbie truly can be a great song writer. It harkens back to his ‘Angels’ days and perhaps a time when depression and drugs really inspired some great music, unfortunately.

Though the days of ‘Win some, lose some’ and ‘No regrets’ may be long gone, Robbie is still trying to find his musical niche and even though his new affected London, Mike Skinner accent might wear you thin, Rudebox is certainly not an album to be tossed aside with a snarky remark. Have a listen and groove a little- I know you want to.

Robbie Williams: Art Star

It’s a mad house, this modern life.. ain’t it? Well, Karen O might think so, but here’s a news feature from ContactMusic declaring that Robbie Wiliams sure doesn’t; he has decided to sell some artwork he’s done of… yes, you guessed it, HIMSELF.

British pop hunk ROBBIE WILLIAMS has created a series of artworks featuring his own likeness for a new exhibition. The ROCK DJ hitmaker’s head and shoulders star in a series of black and white images, dotted with blocks of colour. The 32-year-old’s four artworks will go on display at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff from Monday (27NOV06), with an asking price of $5,310 (GBP2,950). An exhibition spokesman says, “Robbie’s a real artist – both in his music and his pictures. We wanted to bring art into the 21st century and make it interesting for younger people. Robbie’s perfect for that.”

The quote from the spokesperson is truly fantastic, if I don’t say so myself.

Would you buy one of these pieces? (Jen, we know you would but anyone else out there?)

As a side note, a few years back when Interpol was pushing Antics they opened a mini art gallery of sorts in SoHo (anyone remember that?) and were selling posters & original pieces which consisted of their likenesses (created by someone outside of the band) and I still treasure a Daniel Kessler 18X24 I bought that day 2 years ago.

After All These Years…

Robbie Williams STILL won’t come out.

Latest quote from Contact Music:

British pop star ROBBIE WILLIAMS has confessed he may end up dating a man after a series of unsuccessful relationships with women. The ex-TAKE THAT boy band member, who has been linked to model RACHEL HUNTER and actress NICOLE KIDMAN, is notorious for his womanising past. But the ANGELS star, who strongly believes his perfect partner is out there, may give up on women altogether to find his soulmate. Williams says, “Living in Los Angeles, I’ve been on so many dates. I’ve developed relationships that have been short-lived, for whatever reason. The press have never found out. “But I believe there’s one person out there for everybody. I hope that she – whoever I choose – is a good ‘un. “Or he… you never know, you never know.”

Robbie Williams – Better Man

I’ll Believe It When I See It

According to professional arsehole, Gary Barlow, Robbie Williams is going to join Take That* on some of their reunion tour dates around Britain this Spring. Well according to Robbie’s book, Feel (yes I’ve read it get over it), hell will have to freeze over for him actually to do that. Despite Robbie’s continued protest, the NME is reporting that this is set to happen on some unspecified Take That concert dates.

What I found most amusing about the NME article was this bit of information:

As reported yesterday (April 23) on NME.COM, the four-piece kicked off their first jaunt since 1995 in Newcastle on Sunday (April 23) – and although Robbie couldn’t be with them in person, he joined them via a 10ft hologram for a version of ‘Could It Be Magic’.

You have got to be kidding me. A ten foot hologram of Robbie Williams hovering over the stage, towering above those poor boys who withered away after Take That? How freaking humiliating. I love it.

In other Robbie news, the support acts for his European dates have been announced. Basement Jaxx and The Ordinary Boys will be joining him. Robbie will be playing in 14 countries in 4 months to 2.6 million people. The European tour kicks off June 9th in Croke Park, Ireland.

*I don’t recall being a Take That fan when I was younger. Take That never really did make it over here in the States. We got a bit of ‘Back for good’ but that’s about it. I was, however, a huge New Kids on the Block fan at age eight. It was all about Donny Wahlberg, I loved the bad boys. Now I say that I don’t recall being a Take That fan but one day after I was in college, I was rummaging through my old school things when I came across a notepad. The notepad contained a list of all the actors and singers I thought were cute at about age 11 or 12. Nestled near the bottom of this list, written in multi-fluorescent coloured pens, was a very familiar name. Robbie Williams. Apparently, my taste in men hasn’t changed.

Download ‘Advertising Space’ here. It’s the second single from Intensive Care and is about the death of Elvis Presley. The song’s really beautiful and worth a listen.

Radio on the TV

I just saw the new preview for the flop tv show Pepper Dennis, staring Rebecca Romijn. I was ecstatic to see that they used KT Tunstall’s ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’ as the background music. KT’s been getting rather popular these days hasn’t she? I’m still always so surprised to hear that other people know her. I was out at the Boy Least Likely to concert the other day when one of the girls I was chatting to brought her up and it blew me away.

Anyone else ever have that happy moment when they recognise the music being played in the background of something on tv? Whenever NBC’s new season starts, I know I am always SO excited to hear Robbie William’s ‘Let Me Entertain You’ come blaring out at me. I always wonder how many Americans actually know that is him. And since we are on the subject of Robbie, according to the BBC today, he has won the best male artist award at the German Echo music awards for the fifth year running- just in case anyone else besides me was interested.

Robbie Williams is a Punter

According to the NME, Robbie Williams has finally caved and bought shares of his beloved Port Vale football team. It seems like years that we’ve been reading about Port Vale shamelessly telling the press about their hopes that the 84 million pound rocker will bail them out. I guess he was just as sick of reading it as we were.

If you haven’t heard Robbie’s new album Intensive Care yet, I suggest you get on that. One thing that I am a big advocate of when it comes to music is cleanliness. I love a well crafted song, one that is neat and tidy with good hooks, a perfect beat and great lyrics. You may not all agree with me, but Robbie Williams is one of those artists whose work, often over-looked, in fact embodies all those qualities of pop perfection. I think many artists out there nowadays slam together songs, call themselves a band and then fizzle when it comes time for even a second single (Hello Test Icicles). Music is an art and with any great work of art, there is a point in its creation where the artist knows it is complete and wonderful- which then makes it is easy to tell the difference between someone with a skilled hand and one without (examples are Oxford Collapse, Arctic Monkeys and even some of We Are Scientists’ songs, sorry). That’s why, for instance as an art historian, I can easily tell the difference between a true Rembrandt and one from his students. It’s all about skill baby, Rembrandt’s not called an Old Master for nothing.

Back in Black

Just finished watching Robbie’s new video for ‘Tripping’ off the new album Intensive Care, out in your shops 24th October. I assume it is meant to chronicle some sort of drug induced state (not that I would know ANYTHING about drugs). The video is very strange, as is the song, making me think somewhere in the middle, ‘my god Rob, you’ve lost it’ but it all ends with Robbie looking at the camera, cheeky grin plastered across his face and a glint in his eye so I don’t think he’s lost his mind quite yet. The second single, ‘Make Me Pure’ is more instantly likeable but I think ‘Tripping’ is growing on me (you can listen to both tracks on the new site linked above). It did take a few listens to like ‘Radio’ off of his greatest hits album as well.

There’s a song on the album called ‘Your Gay Friend.’ Now I haven’t heard it but could this be the Robbie comes out song? I have been the biggest advocate of Robbie’s heterosexuality but I must admit that my beliefs were rocked when I saw him rocking an earring in his right ear for Live 8. I guess I’ll just have to wait and listen and anyway, does anyone even do that right earring thing anymore besides Elton John?

(PS: I had a fabulous time away and I even got to see some live music. Cheers Matt for joining the team you are brilliant my love.)

Man For All Seasons

Now that Skye has gone and left me to wallow in my dissertation woes for a month alone I thought I might take this opportunity to turn this place into a Robbie Williams fan site. Well, maybe not. But I am excited to say that my not so secret obsession is back with a new album, Intensive Care, set to hit stores on October 10th with the first single entitled ‘Trippin.’ You can pre-order it at HMV. He’s also planning a massive tour. The new video for the single is apparently a mockumetary about his life as a pop star and the producers are looking for Robbie look a likes from all stages of his life to try out.

In other news Marc Cohn was apparently shot in the head during an attempted carjacking after leaving a show. Witnesses were shocked saying ‘I didn’t know he was still touring?!’
