Last night marked my second time experiencing Novice Theory in the flesh (my initial exposure to the Brooklyn based act arrived this autumn via a private event hosted by Obsession Collection Music). It’s particularly difficult to categorize Novice Theory’s sound into one or two sub-genres. Novice Theory (brainchild of Geo Wyeth) intersperses elements of jazz, folk & prog into a beautiful musical whirlwind. Their fifty minute Rockwood Music Hall set pulled my jaw to the ground from start to finish. Undoubtedly exquisite! Official TMS Rating: 10/10. Be certain to visit Novice Theory on MySpace.

Max Vernon describes his music with the following blurb on his official MySpace page: *Joni Mitchell, David Bowie & Stephen Sondheim get together for dinner, sip a few cocktails, talk about politics, hard drugs and how everyone sucks.* In a bizarre way, he’s brilliantly self aware. Max may fear that his songs sound too ‘ragtime’ (as he repeatedly insists during his live shows), but his beautifully quirky tunes fail to fall into one sub-genre. They’re stunning through and through. Max Vernon recently covered ‘The Headmaster Ritual’ for our Morrissey covers compilation: TMS Hearts Moz.

This past Saturday, The Physics of Meaning added a second date to their tour through New York, playing a special, intimate performance at Rockwood Music Hall. We love Rockwood Music Hall, we really do, but Jesus Mary and Joseph, it was hot in there. Standing nearly stock still we were pouring sweat.
Despite the hallucinating heat, Physics gave it their all, never faltering in their energetic performance. They’ve added a new song to the repertoire that closed the show that was stellar. I don’t know what it was called, must remember to ask them in Austin at one of their 5 performances…
On Sunday night, I saw my fifth (or is it sixth?) David Clement show.
He’s a fantastic acoustic musician who performs regularly with a celloist and additional electric guitarist, both of which are highly talented and adorable on stage with him.
David Clement is what a singer-songwriter is supposed to be.
None of the bullshit attitude, none of the awful lyrics (candy lips and bubblegum tongue, anyone??), and massive amounts of stage presence (take that, Cat Power!)
I highly suggest you go to one of his shows if you live in NYC as he does at least one per month in and around the LES/East Village.
