Saddle Creek Records Opens Omaha Venue

Via Filter: *Saddle Creek Records executives Robb Nansel and Jason Kulbel will open a 470-capacity live music venue in downtown Omaha later this month. The Slowdown venue (named after the band) is part of a multimillion-dollar, mixed-use development that will include apartments, an art-house theater, retail stores, and a restaurant. Nansel and Kulbel own the entire complex and will essentially be landlords.

Slowdown features a balcony that hovers 14 feet above the stage, a retractable glass wall that can separate the bar from the stage, a green room with showers and a washer-dryer, a photo booth, and a free jukebox which is surely stocked with a boat load of Saddle Creek releases. It’s almost enough to make an indie-rock fan wanna move to Nebraska. Almost.*

Georgie James (ex-Q & Not U) Signs To Saddle Creek

Via CMJ: *Saddle Creek has signed DC duo Georgie James and will be releasing their debut album, Places, this September.

Neither member is new to the business—John Davis formerly fronted the successful indie group Q And Not U, while Laura Burhenn released four solo albums through her own Laboratory label.

After the two met in 2005, they released a demo CD, Demos at Dance Place, but have since been waiting to find the right home to release their debut. Davis considers it an honor to be signed to Saddle Creek, joining the likes of Bright Eyes and Two Gallants, among others. “I’ve followed the label since they were known as Lumberjack, over a decade ago, and I’m glad that we’ll be working together,” he says. “Saddle Creek is one of those labels that you can trust, both artistically and ethically, and we feel fortunate to get to team up with them.” The duo plans to tour both in the US and overseas this fall following the release of Places, although no dates have been set.*
