Leeds group Sky Larkin are making their latest EP available to stream over at Soundcloud. Featuring “Year Dot” from latest LP Kaleide as well as a cover of Heart’s “Barracuda”, the EP also includes remixes of “Year Dot” and the album track “Still Windmills”.
Kaleid, the newest offering from Sky Larkin was a time machine for me. It transported me directly to my mid-teenage years, when I listened to a whole, whole lot of Julianna Hatfield. There is no better way for me to relay what you’ll get from this album than to say see also: that. That being said, those were some of my favorite listening experiences of all time. The production, the bombastic alt-rock feel, the verse-chorus-verse/quiet-loud-quiet songs….I love them and probably haven’t loved a set of songs in that specific way since my disaffected bedroom listens so long ago. Granted, the songwriting on this album, with a few glaring exceptions, is a lot stronger, and from a clean, dynamic production angle, they are incomparable. This is a great sounding album, and is (perhaps to a flaw) accessible in almost every way. I wish I could go back and leave this in 1995, so I could really get into it. Larkin’s new album is a success in honing this upbeat, fuzzed-out rock, and a success in putting me back into flannel and airwalks. Thanks Sky!
Leeds group Sky Larkin have added a bunch of North American dates to those already announced over here in dear old Blighty, and they’ve sent a bunch of goodies in the form of a video for “Still Windmills” and a cover of Heart’s 1977 hit “Barracuda” (download after the jump). Terrific stuff, and presumably all recorded in their Yorkshire crypt. I loved The Golden Spike, and I can’t wait for Kaleide.
