SP front man, Leo Maymind, enjoys the following tunes:
1. Ganglians - Voodoo. I’m pretty certain this is the most melodically complex song released on any Woodsist release. A great song.
2. Blind Man’s Color - Ancient Urchins. From their EP. I’m really looking forward to their full length, which is coming out soon on Kanine. These guys also remixed one of our songs. Super nice dudes.
3. Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues. I just recently got the Nuggets box set, finally. The title of this song says it all.
Last night marked the record release party for the (brilliant) new EP from Spanish Prisoners: Los Angeles Guitar Dream. The short-player is available for free via Bandcamp and includes some of Brooklyn based band’s strongest tracks to date. A sort of hybrid between Last Shadow Puppets, Grandaddy & Lifted era Bright Eyes, Spanish Prisoners are quickly becoming one of my most cherished local acts. They recently recorded a fabulous Daytrotter session. Be sure to visit Spanish Prisoners at their MySpace page.
More photos & a Spanish Prisoners tune AFTER THE JUMP…
Back in February (following his NYC gig with Daniel Johnston), I interviewed Leo Maymind, the alluring frontman of Spanish Prisoners. During that Q&A, he described SP’s tunes as ‘eclectic noisy chamber pop’. The band’s debut LP, Songs To Forget, does indeed marry the aforementioned genres into one giant pool of cohesion. However, last night’s performance was certainly more electric and robust than the majority of SP’s recorded material. Accompanied by a multi talented keyboardist (with a penchant for melodica & glockenspiel) alongside an adroit drummer, Spanish Prisoners produced a full and opulent eight track set. Sample a handful of tunes and view upcoming tour dates at their official MySpace page.
Waiting... One of the things that gets under my skin is having to wait for a music download to finish. I usually end up playing something silly, like online bingo or some other flash game, while I'm trying to kill some time. It's an easy way to kill 10 minutes while waiting.
