PHOENIX & PASSION PIT @ CENTRAL PARK: EXCEPTIONAL MATCH

Our fabulous guest blogger, Kenya L. Jones, reports on Saturday night’s gig! It was a great set up at Rumsey Playfield. There were tons of kids there. Food, drinks and a massive merch stand. The two bands were perfect together; a truly exceptional match. Boston’s Passion Pit opened, tossing out tunes from their LP, Manners. The set was simple and easy; the crowd giving as good as they got. Front man, Michael Angelakos, even commented on how it (the second of two sold out performances) was a bit livelier than the first night. Everybody reacted well to gems “Sleepyhead”, “The Reeling” & “Cuddle Fuddle”. They also really went nuts for “Little Secrets”, singing enthusiastically along with Michael. The band sounded very good, not a blip or a peep unintended (so far as I could tell) and their energy level was contagious. Breezing through “Til Kingdom Come”, “Better Things” & “I’ve Got Your Number” without a hitch amidst much fanfare. It left everybody a bit warmer for the relatively short wait for Phoenix on the cool fall night.

Phoenix’s set had a bit more ‘show’ to it, in that their album art held court over the drum kit with lit LCD lined panels and flashing lights dancing around to illuminate the Frenchmen. They stepped on stage bathed in silhouette and stood in a line for a beat. Then they kicked into “Lisztomania”. From there, it was smooth sailing through “If I Ever Feel Better” (off United) as well as “Run Run Run” and “Everything Is Everything” (off Alphabetical) along with what’s most familiar to the Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix fans – including 1 (or 2, I guess) of my faves: “Love Like A Sunset” (parts 1 & 2).

The Decemberists & Grizzly Bear @ Summerstage: Fill Our Mouths With Cinnamon

July, July. Last night Grizzly Bear and The Decemberists put on one of the best outdoor gigs in recent memory (sorry Land of Talk fans, I arrived at the tail end of their set). In spite of a strict curfew, an impending thunderstorm and a sea of litterers (so upsetting), both acts unquestionably soared to great heights.

Grizzly Bear’s 45-minute set focused almost exclusively on last year’s much-loved record, Yellow House. I must admit, at first it was rather perplexing to see Grizzly Bear in pure daylight as their recorded material tends to skew towards the dark side. However, once the band performed fan-favorite ‘Knife’, all my doubts disappeared. Kudos, boys. Keep up on all things Grizzly Bear here on the band’s official MySpace page.

Ahh, The Decemberists. Somehow, no matter how much critical acclaim the Portland-based act receives, they still manage to pour their hearts and souls into their live gigs without an ounce of arrogance. Last night’s set, geared towards summer songs (well, at least the first few numbers), was remarkable. Colin & the gang did a superb job interweaving tracks from their latest effort, The Crane Wife, with older songs from their expansive catalog (setlist below). Highlights of the show include a beautiful main set-closing ‘Sons & Daughters’, complete with crowd participation, as well as an actual – yet slightly bizarre – venue sit-down session leading up to the final crescendo to ‘The Chimbley Sweep’. The show’s final tune, ‘The Mariner’s Revenge Song’, left nearly everybody in attendance with massive smiles upon their departure from Central Park. Phenomenal!
