Since the release of Sigur Ros’s breakthrough LP, Agaetis Byrjun, I’ve attended over a dozen gigs by the Icelandic quartet. Without fail, each & every one of those performances has left me in a state of absolute awe. Two months ago, Jonsi unveiled his gorgeous debut solo album, Go. Unsurprisingly, I was totally enamored with the nine track opus upon initial listen. Last night, Jon Thor Birgisson brought Go to New York City. Alongside a stunning backdrop (including but not limited to a slew of nature themed animations & panels of shredded glass), Jonsi’s vocals induced shivers all evening long. All 3000+ attendees were in the palms of his hands. In fact, I’ve never witnessed a more respectful crowd at the massive Hell’s Kitchen space. A truly sensational engagement from start to finish. Over the course of the last ten years, I’ve seen more Gossip shows than I can possibly recall. Unlike so many other acts, as they’ve gained acclaim & popularity, their gigs have gotten stronger and stronger. If last year’s Terminal 5 gig was brilliant, then last night’s 75 minute performance was absolute perfection. At one point, Beth Ditto actually passed me her microphone to sing the second verse of ‘Pop Goes The World’. Ha! That scenario paired with a spectacular set-closing Grace Jones cover (alongside The Phenomenal Handclap Band) easily places this rendezvous at the top of the pile. Official TMS Rating: 10/10. In spite of the fact that 1998′s Moon Safari stands as one of my favorite albums of all time, I’ve never had the privilege of catching a performance by Air. Last night remedied that situation. Backed by a live drummer, the fashionably attired French duo’s ninety minute set bounced back and forth between all of their releases – opening with a bevy of tunes from their latest effort, Love 2, and commencing with myriad Moon Safari favorites. While Air’s stage presence is far from engaging, there’s no denying the simplistic beauty of their material. TMS Rating: 8/10. Be sure to visit Air on MySpace.
