Butch and Bellie & Screaming Females @ Delancey for Beg Yr Pardon 11/7

Beg Yr Pardon is always a great night out. It was especially enjoyable for me this past month since I was the one behind the dj booth. Let me tell you, it’s a nice view.

I had to start a new job bright and early the next morning, so I only could stay for a little. I was able to catch the first group up though, a gay rapping duo with their drag queen dj and fag hag back-up singers. They were fantastic and so nice.

Their live show is very funny and not a little bit outrageous. The whole group is completely camp, decked out in leisure suits, hot pants and lots of bling.

Though a bit rough, their show is not to be missed. They could do with some more practice to smooth their flow but part of what was endearing were all the little mishaps and impromptu joking.

The song I especially liked was ‘Prayer Warrior’. The girl (Tic-Tac?) who sang the chorus was off utterly amazing, with a voice that would have been well suited for Broadway.

The final band I caught were the Screaming Females. I couldn’t stay for much but what I did hear, I liked. They are a good live band playing female fronted rock with a definite edge.

Make sure to come out to the next Beg Yr Pardon. The next one may or may not be on my birthday, December 12th but if it is, Matt and I will be djing the party. I’ll keep you posted.

Botanica & Band Of York @ The Delancey

2 seemingly different bands doing their best to serenade fans at The Delancey last night. Botanica opted for an accordian and some a capella stylings while Band Of York opted for ditties about drag queens, socialites and strippers.

Botanica, for those of you not familiar, declares on their MySpace page that they are “punk rock chamber music for the 21st century”. With influences ranging from Charlie Chaplin, The Kinks, Bach and Bob Dylan, you simply have to witness the spectacle that is Botanica. The band plays Joe’s Pub on 11/16. See you there.

Check out some Botanica tunes here!

Band Of York, one of our great city’s best kept secrets, continues to surprise and wow us. Last night’s highlights included the brand new ‘Hot Thing’ and setlist-staple ‘I’m Your Man’. Boy George would have been proud. Their next show is 12/1 (details TBD).

Hear some BOY here!

**Also, we just want to throw it out there to keep 12/2 open! The Music Slut will be hosting a fabulous party with 4 phenonemal bands and an even more phenomenal DJ. Details soon!!**

EZ Machine & Cassettes Won’t Listen @ The Delancey 8/16: Beg Yr Pardon

Matt’s commentary is in BLUE, Jen’s in PINK.

I really love walking into a show, knowing nothing about the band and then being blown away. I guess I just love a good surprise.

EZ Machines came completely out of left field for me. They reminded me of a hip-hop version of Super Mario Brothers.

They were so fun, so cool and got the crowd very excited. Definitely a group whose show I wouldn’t pass up seeing again.

Cassettes Won’t Listen put on a spectacular show last night @ The Delancey. Having only been familiar with ‘Lunch For Breakfast’, I was expecting an electro-pop experience.. not unlike that of the Postal Service. Instead, Jen, myself, and the other 75 people or so in attendance got a whirlwind of a show that involved a bevy of guest stars, a strobe light, and 2 turntables (& a microphone!)

Who would have guessed that Mr. Cassettes played a slammin’ electric guitar in addition to his envious keyboarding and DJing skills? The hour-long set was truly cross-genre bending (you like that term, huh?) and overall just really impressive.

When Cassettes’ friend (whose name escapes me and for the sake of this post will go by ‘the rapper’) hopped up on stage for 2 numbers, I was honestly a little tentative about how he would affect Cassettes’ already thrilling show. I’m glad to report that my trepidations were quickly erased as soon as ‘the rapper’ started his tune. We even got an improv about free beer (by the way, fantastic work, Beg yr Pardon)! Quite the pleasant surprise.

The girls helping out on stage were gorgeous weren’t they? And they sounded amazing.

I thought I’d mention the kid who looked like Jamie Bell crouching on the stage during CWL’s entire set. He worked the light effects. The lights were a nice touch but I think CWL were good enough without them.

Anyway, thanks so much Beg Yr Pardon for inviting us out and putting on not only a great show but a really fun night. We can’t wait until the next one (that’s in two weeks folks).
