The Hourly Radio Covers JAMES!

Leave it to The Hourly Radio to release the best cover I’ve heard all year, 11 days before 2006 is complete! For the record and those keeping score at home, my other favorite covers of the year include (but are not limited to) Final Fantasy’s cover of Mariah’s ‘Fantasy’, The Walkmen’s crack on ‘Many Rivers To Cross’ and The Gaskets’ live-staple ‘Got My Mind Set On You’.

The Hourly Radio JUST sent us their acoustic take on the James classic, ‘Say Something’, and it’s fucking genius. The band somehow manages to keep the simplicity of the original recording while evolving it into something that would have fit beautifully as a hidden track to their debut History Will Never Hold Me. Incredible!

The long awaited album release is this Tuesday, September 5.

This happens to be the same day that Beyonce’s B’Day sees the light of day.

You make the choice.

Choose wisely!

If I Told You What I Had To Do Today…

I don’t think you would actually believe me, but I’ll tell you anyway. I was picking up three Himalayan guides from Nepal at JFK who had never left Nepal but were on their way to study at the University of Bridgeport for three years…

See, I told you.

Matt already covered our fantastic night of shows last night, but I thought I would add a few pictures and a word on The Annex opener.

The Tin Bangs opened the show last night at The Annex. I thought they were alright but the person I was with thought them a bit screamy. I think they have the solid underpinnings of a good rock group though. The boys, for some reason, were in need of equipment so The Hourly Radio and Stellastarr lended a hand and pitched in their instruments- note the Stellastarr drum kit in the background.

The Hourly Radio’s show is the most photogenic I have ever been to. Now that I have seen them a couple of times, the smoke effects before they go on stage is enough to get me giddy.

I’d like to send a big shout out to Xiaoting whom I finally got to meet in person last night. Holla!

Props to the two girls dancing in front of We Are Americana last night. Way to get your freak on. I love this picture.

Thanks Jess, Rob, Kurt and Dennis for a great show and also being the nicest/cutest rock band I know. I’ll give you sweaty hugs any day of the week.

The Hourly Radio @ The Annex, 8/17: Ain’t Nothin’ Like The Real Thing, Baby.

Another month, another Hourly Radio residency at The Annex.

Last night’s half hour set was spectacular as always (although too short!).

The band started the show in typical THR fashion with ‘Travelsigns’ before launching into (what I consider to be) the hits, ‘Crime Does Pay’, ‘He Said/She Said’ and of course, my personal favorite, ‘Deaf Ears’.

Their debut LP, History Will Never Hold Me will be out in just a few short weeks.

If you’re smart you’ll catch them at The Annex before they are headlining Irving Plaza. They’ll be back again next Thursday @ 9pm. The best $7 you will have spent all month! I promise.

The Hourly Radio Returns!

Yay, the boys are back!

This just in:

The Hourly Radio @ The Annex 6/22: All Grown Up

I think Matt has already summed it up quite well how we felt about The Hourly Radio last night. I’d just like to make a comment though about how much this band has evolved in my opinion. Their live show has really been perfected from the lighting, that Matt mentioned, to their brilliant and professional performance. I was taking a look at my old photos of the group when they opened for Stellastarr* back in March, and even their appearance has become sharper (hello Aaron Closson!). Practice really does make perfect, and these guys certainly have put in the hours during their Dallas residency the past couple of months. While their Bowery opening gig was the performance of a band just getting aquainted with playing in front of people, last night was that of a well-oiled machine spewing fantastic dancey, dark, rock.

The Hourly Radio @ The Annex

Before I begin this review let me start off by saying that The Annex truly needs to change their evil ways. You’ve got a great club with decent sound in a prime location that attracts a good number of people, so don’t be shmucks about the bands! Turns out We Are Americana got to the venue FIVE WHOLE MINUTES after they were supposed to and The Annex totally cancelled their appearance? WTF? Perhaps the space was on a tight schedule but seeing how every band on the bill came on at least 10/15 minutes after their ‘advertised’ time, the whole thing rings of BS. Sorry WAA.

In less bitter news, The Hourly Radio was truly amazing last night. I’ve never seen them before, but everything Jamie and Jen say is dead on. The band is strong and confident and have songs that can easily become anthems. Their sound is sort of Longwave meets Hope Of The States meets tiny hints of OK-Computer era Radiohead (yes, I said it). And it works wonderfully. I must also comment on the brilliant light show last night. I felt like I was seeing a show at Irving or Webster. Guys, whoever is in charge of making the stage look as gorgeous as it does, KEEP THEM! Here was my personal highlight of last night, ‘Deaf Ears’.

How’s your Friday going?

Stellastarr* w/ The Hourly Radio @ Bowery 3/27: Blue Flashing Light

Last night, I headed over to Bowery earlier than I normally do to catch The Hourly Radio open for Mobius Band and Stellastarr*. I was glad to see quite a few people made the effort to come out early and catch the band as well.

The Hourly Radio put on a great set. I only wish I could have shouted louder, but after so many shows I think my hollering voice is giving out on me. I’m a bit of a screamer.

The group’s sound can be described as Sigur Ros meets hmmm, Stellastarr* I guess with definite facets of Radiohead. It’s moody and dark but with soaring synths and jivable beats. I was surprised to see that the band was actually from Dallas; they emit such a dark British eighties feel. For more information on the album, check out Skye’s past review.

Drummer, Adam Vanderkolk, is an impressive sight indeed in person with his powerful playing that drives the band through each song with his focus on the dual cymbal. Aaron Closson on vocals is brilliant as well, his voice is ethereal, haunting and sharp.

The highlight of the set by far was ‘Crime Does Pay’. I cannot express how much I love this song. It’s the stand-out dance track off the album, watch they’ll be djing it at Tiwas in a fortnight. The moment you hear it, it’s as if you already know it. Some songs require a second listen to get into, but this one barely requires you to get to the middle before it has you up off your feet. You can download it now from itunes.

All in all, a great show from the boys from Texas. I hope some of you out there got to see them this weekend.

If you are ever wondering who Matt and Jen the Music Sluts are in the crowd, we’re the boy with the specs and the girl with the long brown hair whooping, hollering and dancing like crazy people somewhere in the middle. Stellastarr* is not a very chatty band but the way they rock out, it’s really not necessary. I read a review of the group recently which called them derivative. No one ever said Stellastarr* was reinventing the wheel but they do make good music which gets everyone shaking their ass. Tell me ‘My Coco’ doesn’t pull you out onto the dancefloor every time you hear it? Hearing that song live is worth the price of a ticket if you ask me.

Ok, that’s enough about Stellastarr* from me, I think Matt has it covered in his review. For your viewing pleasure, however, below are some of my pictures from the night.

oh, and to the prick who found it necessary to go buy three beers in the middle of the show, then struggle back up to the front, spilling half of one all over my arm, two words: FUCK YOU. Where should I send the dry-cleaning bill?

*The post title refers to the damned blue light that Stellastarr* kept flashing in my eye. I’ll have to remember my sunglasses tonight.
