It’s been quite a few months since I’ve mentioned Swedish electro geniuses, The Knife. Their live show at Webster Hall during CMJ, back in November, completely floored me and I guess there’s scant additional touting that can be surrendered after seeing the duo in the flesh for the first and [probable] last time (read my review here). In spite of my non-Knife posts of late, I still have much love for the band, as well as the remix you can find below for their Deep Cuts single, ‘Heartbeats’. Enjoy!
I guess with a post title such as that, it would have to be presumed that the band had them in the first place! The reigning king and queen of weirdo Swedish electro are back with a new video for their Silent Shout ditty, ‘Marble House’.
This time we have another animated clip from the duo featuring a very special animal. Which animal you ask? Why, a family of rats, of course! The rodents engage in some violin playing, taking a bath, ironing of clothing, and making an egg breakfast all while hiding from the humans in the household. You have to watch it to fully appreciate its brilliance.
Out of the 6 categories the Swedish Grammis (yes, with an ‘i’) currently have (Artist, Song, Producer, DVD, Group and Composer Of The Year), The Knife picked up the trophy for each and every one! Craziness.
Watch their SUPER CREEPY acceptance speech here (keep in mind, it’s in Swedish):
Somewhere, right now, various members of Abba are cringing. And YOU KNOW IT!
Yes! In addition to the much-blogged ‘Christmas Reindeer’ (it’s actually not technically ‘new’, but just released this Christmas), the duo just completed their highly anticipated new video for Silent Shout‘s ‘Marble House’.
As you might imagine, it’s awesome and a little creepy, simultaneously (seriously, what else did you expect?).
For Knife completists, the ‘Marble House’ single will be released 2/19 in the UK. The single features many other goodies including a bevy of remixes and reworkings by The Knife’s favorite collaborators.
Wow. For once, I’m almost speechless when I attempt to review this show. It was rather surreal.
I went from liking to loving The Knife within the last 24 hours. Their live show is definitely one that’s a difficult task to describe but just to throw some terms/names in, I would tell you that there’s definitely an element of Blue Man Group, early 90s rave (hey, it’s back in full force!), one of those laser light shows that they are held at top science-centric museums, and a creepy public access cable show you catch yourself mysteriously glued to at 3am.
The use of shadow, blinking lights, imagery, multiple screens and costume is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen. As for the music, sure it’s almost entirely pre-recorded (not the vocals, just the sounds) but it really was flawless. The back-to-back punch of ‘Heartbeats’ and ‘Silent Shout’ definitely won over the already overzealous crowd. The set-closing ‘Like A Pen’ was the perfect way to leave the faithful begging for more but feeling distinctly satisfied.
Over the course of the day I’m sure quite a few reviews will pop up from these shows, but for now catch Chris’s review of the early one. Seems like it was quite identical to the late show but no surprise there!
Setlist: Pass This On/The Captain/We Share Our Mothers’ Health/You Make Me Like Charity/Marble House/Forest Families/Kino/Heartbeats/Silent Shout/From Off To On//Like A Pen
The other day I received The Knife‘s debut LP in my mailbox. I must admit, at first I was tentative to tear it open and pop it into my iTunes. I’ve downloaded select tracks off of Silent Shout and I wasn’t thorougly impressed with the Swedes’ work. However, upon reading glowing review after glowing review, I decided to give it a spin. I’m glad I did.
The album is rather hard to describe in simple terms. At times it bring to mind early 90s rave techno and at others it emulates Bjork. Certain tracks bring to mind Aphex Twin (the freaky stuff) while others are a little Orbital/Hot Chip/Mylo. The album is all over the place, but in a good way!
‘Silent Shout’ itself, is a hard track to grasp as an opening number. The song is a whirlwind of sound and emotion as well as distortion and beats. In fact, I must say, I had to give the entire LP about a half dozen spins before I saw what the fuss was all about. But once you ‘get it’, you start loving it (in my case, head bopping/shoulder grooving to it while shooting out e-mails)! The album will be released on Mute here in the States shortly, even though it’s been out in Europe for over a year.
Hey, these guys won the Swedish grammy for best pop group back in ’04! No joke.
