25. StarsThe Five Ghosts

Holds up really well upon repeated listens, unlike it’s predecessor. Though, frustratingly, the title track didn’t end up on the album.

24. Action ActionThe Ones Who Get It Are The Ones Who Need Not To Know

Despite an annoying lead vocalist (who kind of grows on you over time) there’s something special about this album. Energetic, dark, fun and inventive throughout. I believe this was a digital-only self-release, and that’s a shame, as it’s the best thing this band has put out, by miles.

23. The NationalHigh Violet

Doesn’t quite hit the highs that Boxer did, which is why it’s so low on this list, but it’s still a great album that soundtracked much of my year. Often because someone else was playing it. As much as I want their ‘hipster coolness’ to distract from the music, it doesn’t.

Black Violet Friday

Happy Holidays indie record stores. The National are offering an expanded edition of its most recent album High Violet, which includes new studio tracks, b-sides and live recordings,for $7.99 (MSRP $16.98) exclusively at participating independent record stores the day after American Thanksgiving, ie, Black Friday. A day they are “trying to turn Violet” ho hum. You’ll find a map of independent record shops offering the album here and a weird but funny explanation of the whole thing below.

All of this is centered around Record Store Day, which takes place in mid April but this year is expanded to include the biggest shopping day of the year. Thus, in addition, The National will be rewarding fans who support indie record stores on Black Friday with a free mp3 download of “Terrible Love Alternate Version” from the expanded edition.
