He tells Rolling Stone: *No update. It’s the record that never seems to want to come out. It’s also just never been a priority for either Jimmy or myself. The anticipation of the second record has been a far bigger deal for everybody except the two of us. I don’t know about it being the indie-rock Chinese Democracy but now that Chinese Democracy has come out, I guess it just becomes the second Postal Service record that will never come out. There never really was a plan to do a second album. We work from time to time together but we have other things that take up all of our time.*
MP3: The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
Last night (courtesy of the fine folks at Rhapsody), I was fortunate enough to catch an extraordinarily intimate gig from Death Cab For Cutie’s alluring frontman. While you might assume that the 50 minute acoustic set would be corporate and lackluster, it was anything but. Ben showcased a bouquet of covers (including Rilo Kiley’s ‘Silver Lining’ & Stars’ ‘Your Ex Lover Is Dead) alongside some of DCFC’s most cherished early material (stunning takes on ‘Photobooth’ & ‘405′). Perhaps an even bigger treat was a flawless rendition of The Postal Service’s ‘Brand New Colony’. The surprisingly respectful crowd pleaded for ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark’ (off 2005’s Plans) and that’s exactly how Ben ended the divine evening. Read my review of Ben Gibbard @ NYC’s Town Hall, circa May of 2007, here. Photos below.

It ain’t pretty. He unleashes these saddening words with Rolling Stone: *”The second album is threatening to become the Chinese Democracy of indie rock.”* Yikes! Let’s hope not. MP3 below.

Ben Gibbard breaks the disappointing news to Spinner: *”It’s just not a priority for either of us. So the next Postal Service record may or may never happen. Jimmy and I are still throwing ideas back and forth, but as time goes on, we find ourselves busy with our own music. We have some stuff, but it’s been difficult to find the time and the drive to do the record. I’d love to finish it at some point and maybe even do some performances. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.”*
