For my money, there is nothing that can inspire joy as much as a group sing-along. Why is this? Why is the sudden burst of song so uplifting? Is it the primal urge we have for companionship? Is it the ancient memory of telling stories through song around a campfire? Or is it the happiness we see on each other’s faces while we sing? One of my favorite memories of my undergrad years is sitting in the piano room in Centerville Hall at the University of Maryland whilst a friend tickled the ivories and a dozen others sat around him singing Cat Stevens, Billy Joel, Simon And Garfunkel. So here now, my top 5 favorite group sing-along scenes from film. A list kindled from last night’s viewing of Ghostbusters II on AMC…
1. Almost Famous – ‘Tiny Dancer’
2. Ghostbusters II – ‘Higher And Higher’
3. Beautiful Girls – ‘Sweet Caroline’
4. There’s Something About Mary – ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’
5. My Best Friend’s Wedding – ‘Say A Little Prayer For You’
*Honorable mention since technically, no one is ‘singing’ except Ferris: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – ‘Danke Schoen’
