LAURA BARRETT @ TOWN HALL: THE SHARPER SIDE

Prior to last night’s sensational performance by The Magnetic Fields, the Canadian chanteuse won me over with her delicate, delightful and imaginative half hour set. Laura Barrett (of The Hidden Cameras) toyed around with her kalimba (an African thumb piano) for nearly every song all while showcasing her gorgeous vocal style – a truly winning combination. For one selection, she even tapped on a keyboard using only her feet! Quirky done right. Official TMS Rating: 9/10. Laura Barrett’s Victory Garden is out now. Be certain to visit Laura Barrett at her official MySpace page.

BEN KWELLER @ TOWN HALL: PRETTY AS A FLOWER

Over the course of the last seven years, I’ve seen BK more times than I can possibly remember. Last night’s country inspired set was easily the best of the massive bunch. Be sure to visit Ben Kweller at his official MySpace page.

ANTONY @ TOWN HALL: LOVE MYSTERY

Every time I witness an Antony performance, I get goosebumps. Last night was surely no exception. Showcasing a wide range of his beautiful catalog, he also found time to wax poetically about Obama, Kate Bush and his eternal love affair with New York City. Musical highlights of the evening included stunning takes on I Am A Bird Now‘s ‘Fistful Of Love’, Another World‘s ‘Shake That Devil’, The Crying Light‘s ‘One Dove’ & his (now standard) cover of Beyonce’s ‘Crazy In Love’. Undoubtedly glorious in every way possible.

Adam Green @ Town Hall: He’s The Brat

Following brief yet alluring sets by Tim Fite & Laura Marling, Adam Green stunned NYC’s famed venue with a 90 minute aural assault highlighting the best tunes from his 5 solo LPs.

Adam’s charm & eccentricity shone brightly all evening long – from the opening riffs of ‘Festival Song’ to the show culminating finesse of ‘Jessica’. While I feel that the majority of his recorded material is hit or miss, there’s simply no denying that with the assistance of a full band and two gorgeous background vocalists, each and every track soared throughout the 1400 capacity auditorium. Significant zeniths include the captivating back to back to back trio of ‘Dance With Me’, ‘Morning After Midnight’ & ‘Baby’s Gonna Die Tonight’ as well as a delightful take on ‘Friends Of Mine’. Replete with adorable stage banter, absurd dance moves and ultra witty responses to the many hecklers, Adam Green put on a truly impeccable performance. Visit AG on MySpace. Accompanying photos from Adam’s Barcelona gig (same outfit) courtesy of Alterna2. Complete setlist & an MP3 follow.

Setlist: Festival Song. Hollywood Bowl. Broadcast Beach. I Wanna Die. Leaky Flask. Cannot Get Sicker. Friends Of Mine. Gemstones. Chubby Princess. Nat King Cole. Her Father And Her. Adam Green Shares Thoughts On Largest NY Show To Date

He tells Village Voice the following in today’s feature: *Well, I’m a New Yorker. I was born in White Plains, in a neighborhood where I couldn’t show my feelings. Where I couldn’t show my feelings without getting beaten up. So this is big for me, to play a gorgeous seater like Town Hall. I have some wonderful clothes that I’ve picked out for the occasion. I’m gonna wash my hair. It’ll be really nice!*

The Magnetic Fields @ Town Hall: Must Be The Voodoo

After Thursday’s awe-inspiring gig at Town Hall (their first of four), I was overeager to see The Magnetic Fields once more before the weekend came to a close. Last night, I was fortunate enough to catch the final evening of their residency; it was charming, humorous & stupendous, yet again. Knowing that the band is not keen on touring regularly, I had a small list of songs I was hoping to hear (and not have to wait four long years to experience). To my good fortune, all prayers were answered in the form of 69 Love Songs‘ ‘Papa Was A Rodeo’, I‘s ‘I Thought You Were My Boyfriend’ and Get Lost‘s ‘Smoke & Mirrors’. Enjoy the full setlist, an MP3 and a solo shot of S. Merritt below. Visit TMF on MySpace.

(Set 1:) California Girls. I Don’t Believe You. All My Little Words. Come Back To San Francisco. Old Fools. Xavier Says. Walking My Gargoyle. Too Drunk To Dream. Till The Bitter End. The Night You Can’t Remember. I Thought You Were My Boyfriend. Water Torture. (Set 2:) Lovers From The Moon. I Wish I Had An Evil Twin. Give Me Back My Dreams. Grand Canyon. Papa Was A Rodeo. Drive On Driver. The Nun’s Litany. The Tiny Goat. Smoke & Mirrors. Zombie Boy. (Encore:) 3-Way. Take X With Me. The Book Of Love.
