Video: Zoe van Goey don’t know Karate
YouTube Preview Image

This is all kinds of awesome. Borderline offensive? Hmm. Judge for yourself, but it’s witty and its cheesy and it’s all the kinds of things I love about ZvG. Okay, it could have done with a giant KimZilla or something but regardless, this tale of martial arts, derring-do and rank cowardice in Old Glasgow is a lot of fun. It helps that it’s married to one of the real standout tracks from Propellor versus Wings, too.

Video: Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat, “Cruel Summer”

You say Bananarama! We say Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat!

Yes, Chemikal’s dynamic duo are back with a subdued take on Bananarama’s 1983 hit (and not a wrench or Mack truck in sight). The track’s taken from the pair’s latest EP (also entitled Cruel Summer, and also features the tracks “Box it Up”, “Man of the Cloth” and “Lonely Weekend”. Sounds like the usual cheery fare, then…

St Vincent’s 4AD Session in the Afternoon

St Vincent, looking incredibly glam, is the latest performer in 4AD’s video sessions; following on from other TMS faves Stornoway, Broken Records and Gang Gang Dance. This session, recorded at Shangri-La in Brooklyn features Annie Clark plus new band and songs from latest LP Strange Mercy. Did I say she’s totes glammed up in this session?

Video: Panico, “Algodon”

Hurrah! Panico return with a video for “Algodon”, a highlight track from one of my favourite LPs of 2010 (I had to work very hard not to title this post “Panico get on their bike”).

Shot by Ivan Navarro in Central Park Manhattan and in his Brooklyn studio in April 2010. This movie is part of a sculpture and movies series using electric energy generated by muscular force. A similar video is currently shown in the Baro Gallery in Sao Paulo.

The New Pornographers Turn Up in the Dark

It’s amazing what turns up in the dark email when you get home and finally have a chance to catch up with it: like this animated science-fiction-space-adventure from the New Pornos, continuing the run of terrific videos from Together.

An especially nice touch is the subtitles (with translation on the youtube page). Also, the NPs have a totally sweet spaceship to ride around in.

Video: Sparrow and the Workshop’s “Faded Glory”

After going Against the Grain, Sparrow and the Workshop are back with another video, this time for the upcoming next single from LP Spitting Daggers. This time the boys and girls (and sparrows) are off down th’farm for some fisticuffs (well, down th’allotment, anyway). There’s some seriously threatening fork-waving going on in this video, right enough.

Video: Cults, ‘Go Outside’

Coming via boingboing and featuring footage of the People’s Temple and the Jonestown massacre, it’s the official video for Cults’ ‘Go Outside’. Head over to boingboing to read the full director’s statement, too.

For this music video we didn’t want to put a spin on the footage or the peoples lives—instead we wanted to re-tell and humanize their story.

‘Against the Grain’ is latest video from the Glasgow-domiciled Sparrow & The Workshop, taken from the most recent LP Spitting Daggers. There’s a heck of a lot to live up to after the superb ‘Black to Red’, but this piece by Glasgow School of Art student Jules Gay is certainly bound to do the trick…

From the Archive: Travis, “U16 Girls”

Once upon a time there was a band that made a record called Good Feeling; and on it was an early single: the dodgy, dodgy “U16 girls”. According to the wikip’s straightlaced attempt to describe the song:

The song is a tongue in cheek warning about the dangers of getting into a relationship with a girl who, despite looking much older, is under 16 years old (the legal age of consent in Travis’s native Scotland), hence the name “U16 Girls” meaning Under 16 Girls.

As with much of Good Feeling, there’s an incredible abundance of joy. “Tied to the 90’s”, “Good Feeling”, “All I wanna do is Rock”; all of these are energetic, and they’re exciting.  “U16 girls” sums up the 1997 Travis philosophy: have fun, just be careful doing it, kids (no really, careful now).
