White Rabbits & The Cribs @ Black Cat 8/11

Sometimes, it’s not always about the headliner…

Three weeks have gone by since I saw this show but After the Jump Fest planning had me a bit, well, preoccupied to say the least. Anyway, while visiting DC last month I had a chance to see a band that I kept missing in NYC and another group whom blew me away so much the first time I saw them last year, I haven’t been able to stop talking about them.

First up were the latter of the two, White Rabbits, whom were, of course, amazing. The whole crowd gravitated towards them and were up front cheering and jumping throughout the entire set. A few of my friends even went straight to the back during their set and bought the cd.

Before I go any further, might I say how impressed I was with the DC audience. They totally made me realize why I go to concerts and how jaded New York can be. Even through the opener, locals Takka Takka, there was a full crowd all up front, really into the music.

The headliners for the night were The Cribs. There were a few girls up front whom were really excited, but besides that, half way through their set, the crowd began to thin. Their sound isn’t particularly different or distinguishable from any neighborhood garage band. By the end, I wasn’t the only one to retreat to the back of the room and sit down, they had lost about 50% of the audience. It was a real shame, and on the last night of their tour as well.

White Rabbits Discuss Blog Love + Collaborating With Beirut

White Rabbits singer, Greg Roberts spills the beans to NME: “We have two new songs that we’re recording that we’ve been playing… We’re really excited about them. One is called ‘Cotillion Blues’ and the other one has yet to be named. It sounds like a New Orleans band or something. Our friend (Jon Natchez) who plays in Beirut came in and played some horns on it. The other one is our newest song and we’re really excited about it. And we’re doing a Randy Newman cover ‘Beehive State’”.

Regarding the group’s recent buzzworthy status, Greg proclaims: “The reception over all hasn’t been out of control which is kind of good… I feel like we’re doing things the right way. It feels more like a genuine response than a sensationalised kind of hype. It’s always more rewarding for a band to feel like you’re earning your keep rather than just becoming overnight stars, I don’t think any of us would be comfortable doing that… If we ever do achieve any kind of acclaim of that level I’ll feel like we went about it the right way. We will see if that happens some day.”
